#Day55: Minor Drowns After Forces Chase; Pro-Freedom Rallies Continue; Injuries Mount

One thirteen year old boy drowned in river Jhelum in Srinagar on Thursday when forces chased protestors in Parimpora area of summer capital.

The incident happened around 7 PM which evoked massive protests in Noorbagh, Barthana and other adjoining areas.

Early in the day, protests, pro-freedom rallies and clashes were witnessed across Kashmir, however, Lal Chowk and adjoining areas witnessed brisk private and government vehicular movement. Around 200 civilians were injured across Kashmir in the clashes on 55th consecutive day of anti-India uprising triggered by the killing of popular militant commander Burhan Wani.

Reports and eye witness accounts from Parimpora and adjoining Palpora said that protests were going on in the area. Parimpora is on the Southern bank of Jhelum while Palpora is on its Northern bank in West of Srinagar.

“Protests were going on in the area when forces chased a group of protestors,” a local resident of Palpora said,” four of them jumped in river Jhelum near newly constructed steel Bridge which connects Palpora and Parimpora.”

The local said that three of the four boys managed to reach the Palpora bank but “one boy couldn’t”. He was identified as Danish Sultan, a 13-year-old school going student studying in class seventh. He lived in New Pamposh Colony, Palpora.

For almost two hours after Danish had drowned, press colony failed to report the incident given the “reluctance” of authorities to confirm or deny the tragic incident.

Following the incident, massive protests erupted in the area while scores of youngsters swum deep in Jhelum to find missing Danish. “On the other side, forces came firing numerous tear gas canisters and pellets,” a local caller from the area informed Kashmir Life. The noise of shelling was clear loud on this side of phone.

“Over hundred were injured,” the local informed which was corroborated by the local lawmaker later. The MLA even demanded transfer of cops from the area “for excesses and crossing the limits”.

The locals said that searches continued for late night but Danish is still missing and feared dead.

The incident comes just a day after Ist Year College going student was killed by army in Nadihal area of Baramulla district on Wednesday morning.

Valley had witnessed violent protests on Wednesday in which one youth was killed and more than 300 people had suffered injuries.

Authorities had lifted curfew and restrictions from the entire Valley on Wednesday after 53 days since the mass civil uprising started on July 9.

Educational institutions remained closed for the last 55 days as shops, markets and public transport have also remained suspended.

72 civilians have been killed by forces while number of injured persons has crossed 10000.

On Thursday, pro-freedom protest marches were carried out in different parts of Srinagar city.

Clashes erupted after these protests in certain areas including Nowhatta, Khawja Bazar and Khanyar.

A peaceful protest march was organized in Safakadal Srinagar. Reports said that intense clashes erupted in Khawaja Bazar.

“Youths and forces fought pitched battles in the area before protestors formed a rally and marched towards Gojwara,” eyewitnesses said.

Local sources from Seki Dafar-Nawa Kadal area said that an auto-rickshaw was set on fire by miscreants who according to locals belong to a particular political party.

Curfew-like restrictions were imposed in Kaloosa locality of Bandipora in North Kashmir Thursday in view of escalation in massive pro-freedom protests since past few days, police said.

Reports said that despite strict restrictions, a peaceful protest march was taken out in the district.

Eyewitnesses said that hundreds of people participated in the march that began from Gulshan Chowk in the main town. Protesters who carried placards and banners raised pro-freedom slogans.

The protesters while denouncing the unabated civilian killings demanded political solution to the Kashmir problem.

Reports said as the forces started clearing barricades, the youth pelted stones on them triggering clashes. Several people were wounded during the clashes.

Reports said that a massive pro-freedom rally was organized in Kehnusa area of Bandipora which was telephonically addressed by Hurriyat patriarch Syed Ali Geelani.

He urged upon people to follow resistance leadership calendar. He asked people to be committed towards “on-going freedom struggle and maintain discipline”.

Minor clashes erupted between youth and forces in Sumbal area during which forces dispersed the youth by resorting to tear gas canisters.

Reports from North Kashmir’s Kupwara said that a massive protest was staged by people from different villages against the high handedness of army men in these villages.

Alleging overnight harassment unleashed by army troopers from 18 Rashtriya Rifles in Lolab, hundreds of residents from Sever, Harden, Warnow and Drudban areas held a strong protest demonstration at Khurhama Lolab.

The protesters displayed army uniform having been snatched from the accused troopers during scuffle with angry residents as evidence to local magistrate. The magistrate according to reports assured “resolution of the issue amicably”.

“This has become a routine affair for these army men to barge into our houses and harass male and female members. It is better to fight than to face humiliation from these ‘unbridled’ Army men who seen to be accountable to none,” one of the protesters said.

Clashes between protesters and government forces erupted in Islamabad and Kulgam districts of South Kashmir.

Reports said that a freedom rally was scheduled in Furrah village of Kulgam district which was foiled by forces resulting in clashes.

A same kind of rally was scheduled in Badasgam area of Islamabad district that too was foiled by forces.

Witnesses said that at least a dozen person were injured at both the places where government forces resorted to pellet firing against stone throwing protesters.

A massive pro-freedom rally was held by people at Pakharpora Pulwama.

Witnesses said that more than twenty thousand people participated in the rally. The rally was addressed by different religious preachers.

A major pro-freedom rally was also organized in Trenz area of Shopian district.

Locals said that the preparations for the rally and all the other arrangements were going on for last 10-15 days.

“Arrangements were finalized late yesterday and the rally was held peacefully,” a local of Trenz said. The locals put the number of people attending the rally around 20,000 who have come from different quarters of the district and its villages from Pulwama and Kulgam as well.

Meanwhile, huge rallies were organized in Shamsipora village of Islamabad and Pakherpora area of Pulwama district in which thousands of people participated.

Local sources said that clashes erupted between youth and forces in Goriwan area of Bijbehara during which forces used tear gas canisters to disperse the youth.

Witnesses said that clashes also erupted in Sangam area of Islamabad district while forces use tear smoke shells to disperse the youth. However, no injury was reported during the clashes in the area.

Reports of clashes between protesters and forces poured in from Mazhama, Sozaith, Magam and Kawoosa areas of central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

Reports said that clashes erupted in Mazhama and Kanihama villages after alleged vandalism by the forces.

More than 20 people were injured in the clashes. All the injured were rushed to nearby health centres on private vehicles, reports said. Witnesses added that some injured were shifted to sub-district hospital Magam.

In Kanihama, women took to streets after people were exhorted to come out of their homes through announcements on public address systems.

Witnesses said that a peaceful pro-freedom rally was organised at Yarikalan (one km from Chadoora Town) despite strict curfew like restrictions around the village.

The rally was addressed by Mushtaq-ul-Islam, Mohammad Maqbool and other leaders of Hurriyat Conference.

It rally was attended by the people from villages including Repora, Doyan, Kolibagh, Kralpora, Kathair, Devbagh, Namthehall, Panzan, Chillyech and others.

Meanwhile, reports of clashes and protests were also reported from several areas throughout the day.

Locals alleged that forces smashed window panes and ransacked the residential houses in these villages.

Clashes also broke out in Ompora Budgam where at least four persons were wounded.
