In 2015, the incarcerated All Parties Hurriyat Conference (g) secretary general and Chairperson of Democratic Freedom Party (DFP), Shabir Ahmad Shah was kept under detention for 201 days. “Even today, he was not allowed to offer Friday congregational prayers,” a party spokesperson said.

A DFP spokesperson said authorities have turned Shah’s residence into a sub-jail and close vigil is maintained on every person who comes there.

“Till the end of 2015, he (Shah) was kept under house arrest for a period of 201 days during which he was barred from offering 42 Friday and 2 Eid prayers. This amounts a total of 28 months of house detention with restrictions on 176 Friday and 9 Eid prayers since his release in 2011,” the spokesperson said. “Such detention of Shabir Ahmad Shah clearly implies that administration is not willing to allow the resistance leadership to carry out its political activities and is reneging from its promises of providing space to its political opponents.”

The spokesperson said the “arbitrary” restriction on pro-freedom leadership is actually the “incapability (sic) of the Mufti-led government whose party PDP, during its period in opposition, used to thump chest against the same activities which it is carrying out now, in power”.

“We want to remind the PDP as to how it used to make hue and cry over the curbs on pro-freedom leadership during the Omar Abdullah’s rule and made it the election issue. No sooner did this party assumed power, it forgot all its farce slogans of ‘Battle of Ideas’ and ‘Goli Nahi Boli’ and surpassed its predecessors in imposing restrictions on people and political opponents,” the spokesperson added. “It is so unfortunate and shameful on part of this government that it didn’t allow Shabir Ahmad Shah to participate in the last rites of his close relatives who passed when he was under detention. Such curbs are unconstitutional and the democratic claims of Indian and state authorities are nothing but fraud and deception.”

Meanwhile, authorities on Thursday night placed a senior DFP leader, Engineer Farooq Ahmad Khan under house arrest. Other party leaders and activists were also put behind bars and everywhere there is “Police Raj” prevailing.

A DFP delegation led by district president, Muhammad Amin on Friday visited the residence of slain militant Manzoor Ahmad Bhat in Samboora, Pulwama and expressed condolence with the bereaved family, the spokesperson said.

Another delegation led by Abdul Waheed and Bashir Ahmad visited Sopore to condole the demise of sister of pro-freedom leader Ghulam Ahmad Khan Sopori and DFP activist Muhammad Ibrahim’s grandfather. They expressed solidarity with the bereaved families.

DFP leaders Molvi Sajad Ahmad and Ghazi Manzoor addressed Friday congregation at Jamia Masjid Pattan in north Kashmir wherein they shed light on the latest political developments with regard to Kashmir issue.

Similarly, at Jamia Masjid Trehgam in north Kashmir’s frontier Kupwara district, Peer Inayatullah addressed the congregation and threw light on prevailing political situation with regard to “on-going freedom movement”.
