SRINAGAR: Kashmiri politician and author G M Mir has died in Abbottabad on Thursday after a prolonged illness. He was 93. He was laid to rest there, reports appearing in Pakistan media said.
Mir, believed to be basically from Anantnag, was settled in Abbottabad for past many years after having been bedridden for a long time. He was suffering memory loss because of Alzheimer’s. He has authored series of books on Kashmir. Mir was well versed in Kashmiri, Persian, English, Arabic, Bengali, and Urdu. A widely traveled man, reports about him suggest that he used to call his Mirpur Home, Sopore House.
Mir had written 10 to 12 books, some of which are considered to be the key to understanding the Kashmir mess. Interestingly nothing much was written about Mir in any major Pakistani newspaper. The Kashmir community, however, exchanged information through social media about Mir’s death. It was not immediately known about his family or those who survive him.
