Two militants killed in a Sopore village

SRINAGAR: Reports said a gun fight broke out in a Sopore village slightly ahead of the Sehri. The encounter has led to the killing of two militants.

A mixed column of troops from 21-RR and police had jointly cordoned the Nathipora belt slightly past midnight. As cordon was being enforced, the militant and the army exchanged fire and established a contact. Within a few minutes the encounter was over.

Police said the two militants were holed up in a house. It was not immediately known if the house survived the encounter. Identity of the slain militants is still not established though police believes they belong to Lashkar fold.

Though the operation is over, the Army is still combing the village. Some weapons have been recovered from the spot of the clash.

The encounter in the belt was reported within 24 hours after four cops were injured in a grenade explosion. Police said while probing the grenade attack, they identified two persons of whom one was arrested. It was this arrested man who led the cops to the destination where the midnight encounter took place.

And this IAS officer who would have been in Srinagar today is subject matter of a probe

SRINAGAR: As Kashmir is keenly watching the new breed of administrators take birth, a family in Delhi is mourning its IAS officer who was supposed to join his services in Srinagar on Thursday. Had he been alive, he would have spent Wednesday in IMPARD for a routine per-induction course.

But the 30-year old officer Ashish Dahiya is subject matter of a probe. He is stated to have died by drowning in a swimming pool but the family says he was an ace swimmer. The location was the swimming pool at the Foreign Service Institute in Ber Sarai.

Dahiya was one of the two IAS officers allocated to J&K cadre. A fortnight back, he had won the Director’s Gold Medal during his IAS training.

Before taking the flight to Srinagar, Dahiya and his friends from IFS and Revenue service had arranged a party. Then they want to stroll near the pool. Suddenly a woman colleague slipped into pool. Many of her colleagues jumped in. They rescue her. Later, they found Dahiya missing. He was found floating, dead. He was rushed to Fortis Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Ishwar Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), was quoted saying: “Prima facie, the team that carried out the post-mortem has said that the death was due to drowning and there were no injuries on the body.” Police suspect they had consumed alcohol.

Dahiya’s uncle Kuldeep has said his nephew was an ace swimmer and had crossed a five-kilometer stretch across Bhakra Nangal dam. As a DySP in Himachal, he had even won a gold medal in swimming. Married for three years, his wife Pragya is a doctor. She is also preparing for UPSC examination.

In Srinagar, the IMPARD broke into a condolence meeting. Soon messages of shock and sympathy for the family came from the Raj Bhawan, the Chief Minster’s office and the Chief Secretary B B Vyas. But the mystery remains: was Dahiya drowned or was it a murder as the family claims.

Top Ten Foods for Ramadan

During Ramadan, it’s important to make sure our meals are nutritious and full of easily digestible ingredients. Fresh fruit, vegetables and fish are great to keep hydrated and avoid that lethargic bloated feeling. Allah (swt) has blessed us with an amazing array of foods and if we look to the Qur’an and Sunnah, there’s plenty of guidance of what foods are of great benefit to both the body and mind.

The first food that often comes to mind when we hear the word Ramadan is: dates. We break our fast each day with fresh dates just as The Prophet (saw) did but what other foods can we make the most of this Ramadan? Well here’s our list of ten top Sunnah foods (in no particular order), to keep healthy and hydrated throughout Ramadan.

  1. Squash

Most varieties of squash are water dense. Courgettes are 97% water, whilst butternut and summer squash are both made up of 94% water, helping to keep you hydrated. Stuffed, baked or blended into a soup – they’re highly versatile. Stuff with couscous and oven bake for a healthy Iftar.

  1. Lentils

Lentils are low in cholesterol and great for your digestive health. Not only that, they’re a great source of protein with 26% protein composition. Due to their mix of fibre and complex carbohydrates, they also increase steady, slow burning energy and stabilise your blood sugar. Soups are a good way of keeping full and hydrated during Ramadan – why not try lentil soup for suhur and for iftar make a tasty dhal?

  1. Melon

No Ramadan would be complete without melon. Cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon – there are a wide variety out there. A great source of fibre and rich in water (90% in fact!), this fabulous fruit will keep you hydrated and help relieve stomach ache and gastric problems. Eat solo or in a tasty smoothie.

  1. Eggs

Eggs are a great source of protein and vitamins A, D, E B6 and B12, calcium, iron and zinc. A protein packed suhur is essential to keep you going throughout the day. For suhur, make scrambled eggs on whole meal toast and start your fasting day the right way!

  1. Pomegranate

This ‘super-fruit’ is tasty, incredibly versatile and a great source of vitamins. Not only is pomegranate three times more powerful than green tea as an anti-oxidant but these tasty seeds are also a great source of vitamins A, C, E and folic acid. As pomegranate is great for digestion, be sure to have a glass of pomegranate juice after iftar. For a fruity kick, add the seeds to a salad mixed with feta cheese or enjoy in a simple fruit salad.

  1. Aubergine

Made up of 92% water, this hydrating vegetable is also rich in vitamin B, potassium, folic acid and antioxidant compounds. Keep things low fat and grill thinly sliced aubergines for a great side at your iftar drizzled with olive oil, or add make a great layered oven bake with tomato sauce, topped with cheese.

  1. Rice

Rice is another easily digestible food which helps to stimulate digestion and also regulate your blood sugar levels. Stick to brown rather than white varieties for iftar, served with meat or fish. For suhur, make a tasty rice pudding with rose water (a great mood enhancer) topped with pistachio nuts – another food great for digestion.

  1. Cucumber

One of the best hydrating foods is cucumber – composed of whopping 96% water. What’s more, cucumber is cholesterol and saturated fat free, packed with vitamins K, B6 and iron. A Ramadan must, add to salads, eat with hummus or make your own yoghurt mix (full of healthy bacteria to aid digestion) with grated/diced cucumber, garlic, mint, salt and a few drops of vinegar and olive oil (all top Sunnah ingredients!).

  1. Fish

Fish often gets overlooked for meat when it’s actually high in protein, iron, vitamin D and omega 3. Eating fish can even improve your quality of sleep – great for iftar! Why not swap meat for healthy grilled/baked salmon? Not only is salmon easier to digest but it also boosts brain development and can help ease depression. Serve with brown rice or potatoes and a fresh salad or vegetables for an easy to digest meal.

  1. Banana

Banana is incredibly easy to digest. A specific enzyme in bananas actually speeds up the digestion process which is great for when you head to bed after isha. Bananas are also a great source of energy, helping to reduce stress, improve your mood and cure ulcers and heartburn. A must eat fruit for Ramadan; add to a fresh fruit salad for Iftar. For Suhur blend into a smoothie, spread on brown toast or slice onto oats.

However, the Minister stressed on regulation of street vendors by earmarking restriction-free, restricted and no-vending zones in cities for smooth flow of traffic, pedestrians, cleanliness and maintenance hygiene in the city.

Bukhari asked the SMC to evolve strategic mobility planning to redress pedestrian and transport problems in Srinagar.

During the meeting, the delegation of beneficiaries put forward the issues they face in the allotment of shops and requested the Minister to look into the matter.

While assuring the beneficiaries that their issues will be addressed soon, the Minister directed the SMC officials to verify the allotments papers and other concerned documents of the beneficiaries for their consideration for the allotment of shops.

He directed the officials to expedite the work and solve the problems faced by beneficiaries by June 15.

5 golden rules of eating right during Ramadan

Muslims believe that the spiritual blessings of Ramadan are manifold, and when done right, the holy month of fasting can also come with tangible physical benefits. Combining healthy food choices with fasting resets one’s metabolism and can help one shed a few pounds and lower one’s cholesterol.

Ramadan should not be the season of Pakoras, Parathas and all-you-can-eat buffet Iftars. Those afternoon naps are certainly not going to help burn off the nightly half-kilo of sweets.

Fasting is not a licence to eat with abandon, and nor should it be, according to sunnah.

There is no need to sink into a food coma after every iftar (break-fast meal) or slosh to bed after drinking litres of fluid at sehri (pre-dawn meal) – only to spend the next two hours peeing it all out. And healthy eating in Ramadan does not have to mean boring, bland, unfamiliar “diet food” either.

Quinoa for sehri or grilled salmon at iftar will make fasting seem like a penance instead of a blessing if those are not the sort of foods you would eat anyway. It is perfectly possible to incorporate your favourite Ramadan treats and the sort of food you would normally eat into a sensible, nutritious eating plan.

Here are five golden rules of healthy eating during Ramadan:

  1. STAGGER YOUR HYDRATION

Dehydration is the toughest part of fasting, especially in summer, but loading up on water at sehri is not the best plan. Filling your stomach like a water balloon results in one of two things – throwing up or multiple visits to the loo.

Stagger your hydration through the night to keep yourself hydrated while you fast during the day.

It is far smarter to stagger your hydration through the night.

Start with two glasses of water at iftar, and follow with a glass every hour till bedtime. By the time you sleep, you will have had six glasses of water. Aim for a manageable two glasses at sehri and you have had eight glasses in the day, which is usually sufficient.

Do stay out of the sun to minimise moisture loss through sweating. Remember tea and coffee are dehydrating and should not be counted in your fluid intake.

  1. AVOID SUGAR LIKE IT IS THE MOTHER OF ALL EVILS

We all crave something sweet but sugar results in highs and lows that leaves you with more cravings and thus messes up your metabolism. Sugar gives you empty calories without nutritional benefits and is key in Ramadan over-eating.

Satisfy your sweet tooth with low-sugar desserts like ras malai, a dessert similar to cheesecake.

Totally giving up sugar may be a stretch but limiting it is essential.

Stay away from those giant special-offer bottles of Coke or Pepsi. But if you like your sweet drinks, gradually reduce the amount you use to limit the sugar hit.

Load up on fruit before letting yourself touch any mithai or chocolate. Use grapes in your fruit chaat for sweetness and stay away from the sugar jar. Switch your gulab jamun for ras malai, a dessert similar to cheesecake, which has more milk and less sugar.

  1. HAVE ALL THINGS IN MODERATION

If you really must have parathas and pakoras, limit them to a once-a-week treat rather than a daily indulgence. Instead of pakoras at iftar, try a healthy channa chaat with loads of veggies and spices or dahi vaday which are much less oily. Try baked samosas instead of fried ones or little grilled chicken shashliks instead of pakoras.

Keep choice to a minimum to help avoid over-eating. Accompany your dates with one snack item at iftar and then eat a simple evening meal, with one meat dish and one vegetable dish or salad accompanied by rice or roti.

For sehri, parathas are a poor choice in any case and likely to cause heartburn. Full of processed flour and fat, they lead to lethargy rather than providing a slow release of energy to keep you going through the day. Aim instead for complex carbs in your morning meal – wholemeal roti, daal, semolina or oatmeal. Eggs are great if cooked in very little oil but add more protein in the form of milk, yogurt and nuts to your morning meal.

By all means, indulge in your Ramadan favourites but limit unhealthy food to bite-size portions that you savour rather than platefuls that you wolf down. And beware of the buffet iftar as the Quran is categorical on waste.

  1. BEFRIEND FIBRE

With mealtimes askew and without that morning hit of caffeine, constipation becomes a major issue for many – with attendant gas making things even worse.

Fruits are your fibrous friends.

Add fibre to your diet to keep your gut moving. Fresh fruit and veggies are ideal, especially pears, but sprinkle wheatbran on your cereal or eat a couple of dried prunes every night to up your fibre intake.

  1. SAVE THE OIL FOR YOUR HAIR

Good fats in moderation are an essential part of a balanced diet but we tend to have too much oil in our diets as a nation. Those super-sized cans of oil that fill the advertising slots every Ramadan? All they do is fill the brands’ coffers and our hips and arteries.

Easy on the oil there.

Decant your oil into small bottles and keep an eye on how much you use. Save fried food for special occasions and bake or grill your food when you can. Grilled kebabs, baked filo pastries and baked samosas are all delicious and use a lot less oil. As for the carts of samosas and pakoras on every street-corner, give them a miss – chances are the oil has been re-fried to toxicity.

CBSE JK topper planning year long sabbatical, another to pursue career in Singing

Jammu

State topper of Jammu and Kashmir in the recently declared results of the CBSE Muskan Tiyagi is planning a year-long sabbatical; economics topper of Jammu Nandini Kapoor wants to pursue a career in playback singing.

Topper planning Year long Sabbatical

Muskan Tiyagi, whose father is an employee in the United Breweries (UB) group, scored 491 marks out 500 (97.7 percent), thus becoming a state topper. A resident of Meerut in Utter Pradesh, Muskan landed up in Jammu due to her father’s transfer from Rajasthan to Jammu. Muskan joined Jodhamal Public School (JPS) in the mid-session of Class 11th. She performed well but what surprised even the staff of Jodhamal was her performance in the CBSE 12th class board examination.

They expected her to do well but she would become a state topper was unanticipated. Ask Muskan about hard work she put in for becoming state topper and she would tell you about the importance of taking a well-planned route. “It is not about how many hours you put-in to become a topper but about the quality of work you do. Smart work is as important as hard work. When you sit with books in your hand, no other thought should pass through your mind. Stay focused with whatever you have in your hand. Book or Mobile, both need focused approach,” Muskan told Kashmir Life.

She added “I would sleep at 11 in the night and wake up, exactly at 6.30 in the morning. I have never missed by sleep nor woken-up at 4 in the morning. Self-discipline makes you a successful person is my belief. Love whatever you are doing. Don’t do anything just because your parents or your family believes you can do.  Do whatever you like because you want to do it and see how success would follow you wherever you go.”

Muskan credits her family for having supported every decision she has taken. “My parents have always respected my decisions. They have been my greatest support. They have never forced their decisions on me,” Muskan told Kashmir Life. What separates Muskan from rest of the students who qualified class 12th CBSE examination this year is her decision to take a yearlong sabbatical. “I have planned to spend this year with myself.  I am not in a rush. There is no hurry. So, I shall remain a year away from worries and tensions of future,” said Muskan.

“I have interest in fashion designing and there is also this desire of becoming a Civil Servant. A year away would help me to take firm decision,” added Muskan. National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) or Honors in Literature, let us see what future holds for me, said Muskan. She profusely thanked her school teachers and management for their support. “Had they not been there, this achievement would not have been possible,” Muskan said.

Economics topper interested in playback singing

Daughter of a government employee, Nandini Kapoor scored 99 marks in Economics. Her score was 456 out of 500 i.e 91 percent. With such good grades, it was expected that she would talk about pursuing a career in Chartered Accountancy or Civil Services or Business Management or Hotel Management but Nandini’s plans are indicative of changing mindset of conservative societal set-up in Jammu city. Nandni wants to pursue her career in playback singing.

She wants to become top playback singer of the country. “I have drawn-up plans to become top playback singer of the country. My school has given me the title of “Nightingale of Jammu”. I have earned this title purely because of my singing talent. I do find my singing at par with some of the best in the country,” said Nandini.   She added “I have so far no other plan. I am not interested in civil services but much would depend on how my singing career goes in the days to come.”

Asked about other professions, Nandini said “I do understand singing won’t suffice my daily needs. So, apart from singing, I have great interest in teaching. I would love to become a college or university lecturer after I complete my studies. That would ensure, my pocket does not run dry. But I have so far no plans of civil services or some other government service. I have no interest even in making my career in Banking. I am made for Singing and I want to prove all those wrong who feel that this is not a profession for toppers to choose.”

Nandini’s choice of career has the support of his family. His father Ajay Kapoor, a government employee believes Children should be allowed to decide their destiny. “We should allow our children to decide their future. In the present world, they decide their destiny best. They know their strengths and weaknesses. We can give our opinion but we should better leave decisions to our children. This has been my belief since the day my daughter started going school,” added Kapoor.

Drug peddler held near line of control in Poonch, army claims

Srinagar

Army on Tuesday claimed to have busted a drug racket near Line of Control (LoC) in Bhimber Gali, Poonch District. “The Army apprehended Mohd Kasim, who peddled drugs in India across the border. They also recovered two packets of heroin worth Rs 2 crore from Kasim,” reports said.

Representational Picture

The 23-year-old peddler, who is identified as son of Mohd Mushtaq Chowdhary, is a resident of Poonch’s Hamirpur village in Balakot block, Mendhar tehsil. Working under the garb of a cattle graze, Kasim had gone to the LoC, where he received the drug consignment from a Pakistani Administered Kashmir national.

The Army had a tip off about the exchange, so the alert troops challenged and apprehended the individual, the reports said.

The apprehension is a significant blow to the nefarious designs of Pakistan Army in facilitating narcotics smuggling to “fund terrorism” in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. An FIR has been lodged with Poonch Police. The Army and local police have conducted a thorough search in the area and further investigations are under progress.

‘Tral Chalo’ forces authorities to close Srinagar-Jammu highway

Srinagar

The Srinagar-Jammu highway was closed for traffic on Tuesday in view of the resistance leadership’s call for a march to Tral to pay tributes to Hizbul Mujahideen commander Sabzar Bhat and his colleague, who were killed in an encounter with forces on Saturday.

The chairperson’s of both factions of Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and JKLF chief Yasin Malik had asked people to reach Tral in Pulwama district to pay tributes to the slain militants.

“The Srinagar-Jammu Highway has been closed and no movement of any sort of traffic on either side is being allowed,” an official of the traffic department said.

He said the decision to close the nearly 300-km highway the only all-weather road connecting the Valley with the rest of the world was taken in view of the prevailing situation as the roadway passes through southern parts of Kashmir.

Kashmir problem limited to 5 southern Kashmir districts: Venkaiah Naidu

Srinagar

The government of India has ruled out talks with pro-freedom leaders in Kashmir and has insisted that the problem is limited to just five southern part of Kashmir districts while the rest of the state is “in peace”.

The government is ready for talks on “development” with all other stakeholders, Union Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu, who questioned the demand for a Ramzan ceasefire, said.

In an interview with a news gathering agency, Naidu said the state and central governments were making “best efforts to deal with the situation” in the Kashmir Valley which has been on the boil since the April 9 Srinagar Lok Sabha polls when eight civilian protesters were killed in firing by security forces guarding voting stations.

“We are determined to solve the problem” in Kashmir that “we inherited from previous Congress governments”, said the former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief.

He rejected allegations that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-BJP coalition government led by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had failed to bring normalcy and contain surging violence in the state since the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani on July 8 last year.

Naidu said that the situation in the Kashmir Valley was still “better as compared with earlier UPA governments”.

“Kashmir, which is not our creation, is a 69-year-old problem. Where is the question of failing? It is all legacy of great Congress leaders.”

He said the trouble in the state was not as widespread as it was made out to be in the media.

“Other than five districts, remaining parts of the state are free from violence. Let us understand this. Except for south Kashmir, the state is in peace. In north Kashmir there is no major problem. In Jammu region, there is no major problem. In Ladakh region, there is no problem.”

“Kashmir is not four south Kashmir districts. There is a problem. We have to (solve it). But at the same time, we have to send a message across the border that we will not accept terrorism.”

Asked about a possibility of a ceasefire during the current month of Ramzan that culminates in Eid celebration, the Minister said it was for the Home Minister to look into the demand. But he questioned the very demand itself.

“Ceasefire by whom? Won’t there be any stone-pelting? There will not be any terrorist activity? Will somebody give us an assurance? Suppose people were observing Ramzan and then there is some attack, who has to be responsible.”

Asked about talks with pro-freedom leader groups in the valley, Naidu said all previous efforts of dialogue to solve the Kashmir issue have failed.

“How many years have we been talking? It has become a fashion for some people to make such demands and then be in news. Otherwise what is there in talks? Anybody who swears loyalty to India’s integrity. Yes, we should talk to them irrespective of which party they represent.”

Asked if he was clearly ruling out talks with the pro-freedom amalgam Hurriyat Conference, the Minister said: “All I am saying is there is no question of disintegration of Kashmir. There is no question on the integrity of the country.”

“There are issues of development, lack of development in a particular region. There is no question of giving one inch of land to anybody. Development, we can talk with all. Why are we mentioning separatist? We are willing to talk with all Kashmiri people who are part of India.”

Army Chief’s statement gestures genocide of Kashmiri youth: Jama’at

Srinagar

Jama’at-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday expressed concern over the “threatening and intimidating” statement of Indian Army Chief Bipin Rawat in which he has advocated the use of “military power” against the peaceful agitating youth in the valley thereby giving free license to the army personnel deployed here to use power at their will against the Kashmiri people and assuring them total exemption from any legal accountability for committing breach of any law or regulation.

In a statement issued on Tuesday a spokesperson of Jama’at said: “Further his desire that the protestors use bullets instead of stones, depicts his inner appetite for killing the Kashmiri youth, is also worrisome and agonizing and indicates the dreadful plans of New-Delhi’s BJP government to crush the public uprising here for the execution of which they are seeking the chances. The exemption of army personnel from any legal action involved in human rights violations clearly indicates the plan to use the military power against the people so as to crush their peaceful movement for securing their basic right of self determination as promised to them by the Indian government a number of times through the Security Council of UNO.”

Jama’at-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir considering all these provoking statements the clear violation of all legal norms including that of the Indian Constitution and the international human rights covenants, impressed upon the UNO and all the international and local human rights bodies to take serious notice of all this sordid situation and take all necessary steps to save Kashmiri people from genocide.

Further Jama’at makes it clear that by issuing threatening statements and by misuse of the power, peace has never been maintained but such attitude has always become a cause for adding to the disorder and public chaos.

Jama’at advises the “power crazy Delhi darbar” to understand the ground situation and solve the Kashmir issue as per the aspirations of the local people which justice demands and is also in the interest of the millions of people living in the Indo-Pak sub-continent.
