Scores of families residing in Brandbud Rohuma area of Rafiabad Sopore in North Kashmir Friday staged protest against the ‘failure’ of authorities to shift them to safer places. They claimed that the land in the area has started to sink rapidly. “We are 21 families and the land on which our houses have been constructed have started sinking rapidly. We fear for our lives and so far appealed repeatedly to authorities to shift us to safer places, but no heed was given to our requests,” the protesters told CNS adding that sinking of land started due to incessant rains past week.
Sub Divisional Magistrate Sopore Bashir Ahmed Bhat who visited the area on Friday shortly after the protest termed the situation in the area a matter of great concern.
“The situation in Brandbud is a matter of great concern for the administration. The land has started sinking due to the heavy rains and we are mulling to shift all the families to safer places,” Bhat told CNS adding that a patch of forest land has been identified and these families will be shifted there in coming two days.
