2018: 97 encounters, 252 militants, 80 forces personnel, 44 civilians killed, says police

As the year 2018 has concluded a few days back, the Jammu and Kashmir Police announced the figure of crimes and cases registered in the department throughout the year on Wednesday.

While briefing a presser at Police headquarters Srinagar, the Director General of Police Dilbagh Singh, along with other officers said that 12946, cases were registered in 2018, in which 11880 cases were disposed of, and the disposal rate has gone up to 60 per cent.

He said there were total 97 encounters throughout the year, and 83 spots where the encounter took place suffered collateral damage. During the encounters 252, militants were killed, Jammu and Kashmir police lost 45 police personnel, five CRPF men and 30 army personnel were also killed. There were 44 civilians killed by “militants”.

They said during the year 97, non-militancy related murder cases were registered, in which 32 cases were disposed of and rest cases are pending. 312 cases related to Narcotics were registered, in which 482 persons were arrested, and 71 cases were disposed of.

2006, road accidents related cases were also registered, in which 272 people died. In 225 cases people died in 4 wheelers, 46 in two-wheelers, and one in a three-wheeler. 2551 people have sustained injuries. There were 143 domestic cases registered, in which 89 cases were closed up. 762 burglary cases were also registered.

Commenting on the recent Jamia Masjid controversy DGP Singh said that ISIS outfit is not much in the valley, however, a section of youth is being radicalised.

Traffic movement suspended on Karnah-Kupwara road after fresh snowfall

Srinagar

Authorities on Wednesday suspended traffic movement on the road connecting Karnah to Kupwara following fresh snowfall.

An official said that It is still snowing at Sadhna pass and the traffic movement has been suspended on the road as a precautionary measure.

As per the official record, 1 ft of snow was recorded at Sadhna top while plain areas of the district have received around four inches.

“Due to the fresh snowfall in the area, the Karnah- Kupawara road has been closed for precautionary measures, If there will be an improvement in the weather then hopefully clearance will be started, official added.

However, the snowfall led to slippery conditions on the roads in Kupwara district causing a slow down in traffic movement.

Fresh snowfall breaks cold wave cycle in Kashmir

Fresh snow lashed most parts of the Kashmir Valley on Wednesday as the minimum temperatures rose above the freezing point after nearly a month, officials said.

Fresh snowfall occurred everywhere in the Valley except Srinagar city which received light rain with traces of snow.

Higher reaches, including Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Pir Panchal mountain range and other places, received moderate snowfall on Wednesday.

The Srinagar-Jammu Highway and Gurez Bandipora road was closed due to snow and slippery conditions.

The MeT Office said another spell of snowfall is likely in the Valley beginning January 4.

The minimum temperature was 5.2 degrees Celsius in Srinagar while the mercury in Qazigund in south Kashmir settled at a low of minus 0.3 degrees Celsius.

Gulmarg, the famous skiing resort in north Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 5.0 degrees Celsius.

The night temperature in Pahalgam – the famous health resort which also serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath Yatra – settled at a low of minus 0.5 degrees.

Kokernag town recorded a low of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius while Kupwara town in north Kashmir registered a low of 0.2 degrees Celsius last night.

Leh recorded minus 12.4 degree Celsius and Kargil minus 17 degree as the minimum temperatures.

Jammu recorded a low of 9.6 degrees Celsius while Batote recorded 2.0, Banihal recorded 2.4, and Bhaderwah recorded 1.3 degree Celsius.

Bandipora-Gurez road closed after fresh snowfall

Bandipora-Gurez road has been closed for traffic following a fresh snowfall in the area.

Reports said that the 86-km Bandipora-Gurez road has been closed after fresh snowfall in Gurez, Tragbal and Razdan Pass.

An official said that keeping in view slippery conditions and fresh snowfall, the Bandipora-Gurez road has been closed as a precautionary measure.

Taking to social networking site Twitter, DC Bandipora Shahid Choudhary wrote: “Snowfall. 8-10″. Gurez road closed. 3 machines deployed for clearance. Essential services reviewed for district.”

“Early morning Snow Clearance at Chorwan / Dawar , Gurez,” he tweeted.

In another tweet he said that in view of continuous snowfall and for safety of vehicles/passengers we will be closing Sumbal-Bandipora stretch of road for few hours.

Pak army shoots down Indian ‘spy quadcopter’ : Spokesperson

Pakistan Army has claimed that it shot down an Indian spy quadcopter on the Line of Control.

Pakistan Military spokesman Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor took to social media to announce that the drone was hit in Bagh sector, reports said.

“Pakistan Army troops shot down Indian Spy Quadcopter in Bagh Sector along Line of Control. Not even a quadcopter will be allowed to cross LOC, In Shaa Allah,” he tweeted.

Traffic suspended on Srinagar-Jammu highway after fresh snowfall

Traffic on Srinagar-Jammu highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir valley with the rest of the world was suspended on Wednesday following snowfall since early morning, a traffic police official said.

“We have suspended traffic as a precautionary measure on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway today due to snowfall on both sides of the Jawahar tunnel, Shaitan Nallah and Banihal,” the official told Kashmir Life.
He said several inches of snow had accumulated at tunnel due to which the road has become slippery. However, traffic will be allowed only after an improvement in the weather.

“We cannot allow traffic without getting a green signal from the traffic police officials and Border Road Organisation (BRO) officials posted at different places on the highway,” he added.

Shimla incident: Investigations going on, says HP CM

Chief Minister Himachal Pradesh Jai Ram Thakur on Tuesday said the investigation into ransacking of shops of Kashmiri traders in Rohru area of Shimla was “going on” and the administration was awaiting the report after which issue of compensation would be decided.

“We have already ordered the investigation. The investigation is going on. Let the report come,” Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur told news agency GNS on phone.

Asked whether compensation would be granted to the affected traders as local police have put the initial loss to Kashmiri businessman at Rs 18 lakhs, the Chief Minister said: “I will see. Let the information come.”

Station House Officer (SHO) Rohru, JR Sharma said that a mob on December 27 attacked several shops including those of Kashmiris.

“A case under FIR number 166 under section 143, 147, 148, 149, 341, 153A and 341 IPC  has been registered into the incident,” SHO said.

He said the loss to the shopkeepers has been estimated at Rs 18 lakhs and the report has been forwarded to the concerned SDM. He said all the traders are safe and no one was hurt in the incident.

Director General of Police, Himachal Pradesh, Sita Ram Mardi (IPS) said that they have collected the video and other evidences of the incident.

“We have launched investigations into the incident and assured the Kashmiri traders of action as per law against those involved,” DGP said, adding the security of the traders will be ensured.
