115 Test Negative for Coronavirus in Kashmir

 by Khalid Bashir Gura

SRINAGAR: As the death toll in China’s novel coronavirus epidemic has climbed to 2,715, fortunately, no positive case has been reported from Kashmir since the outbreak despite geographical proximity with China.

While coronavirus is spreading its tentacles in the Middle East, Europe and other parts of the world, thereby making World Health Organization (WHO) issue warning to countries to augment preparations to deal with the emerging crisis, the Jammu and Kashmir health authorities in collaboration with the central government are prepared for any emergency.

Officially, the health sector of Jammu and Kashmir is ready to face any emergency. Despite no positive case having been detected, authorities are cautious and are not taking any chance.

The Jammu Kashmir authorities have taken samples of 115 residents who arrived from China since the outbreak and were suspected of being infected by Coronavirus on the symptomatic basis and travel history, but none of them has tested positive so far.

Dr Shafqat Khan Nodal Officer for Coronavirus (2019 nCov) for J&K who is overseeing the situation,  said over the past month, 115 J&K residents, who have travel history from China, had been suspected for the novel virus so far and are being monitored.

“They were under observation at their respective homes. Till date, of the 115 cases, the samples of 20 people were taken for testing,” he told Kashmir Life.

Khan said of the 20 samples taken for testing, 13 had been declared negative. And seven were rejected due to technical reasons.“There is no need to panic,” said Khan.
