Police identifies militants killed in central Kashmir gunfight

The Jammu and Kashmir police on Friday identified the two slain militants killed in Sutsoo Kalan area of Nowgam in the outskirts of district Srinagar district during a gunfight with government forces.

A police spokesman in a statement said that based on credible inputs about the presence of militants in Sutsoo Kalan area of Nowgam in the outskirts of district Srinagar, a cordon and search operation was launched today morning by Police and security forces in the area.

“As the searches were going on, the search party was fired upon by the hiding militants. The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter,” said the spokesman.

“In the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed and the bodies were retrieved from the site of the encounter,” he said.

“From the incriminating material recovered at the site of the encounter, it is understood that both the slain militants are Pakistani Nationals identified as Ali and Idrees,” he added.

The spokesman said as per the police records, both the slain militants were affiliated with proscribed militant outfit JeM and were wanted by law for their complicity in a series of crimes including an attack on security establishments and civilian atrocities.

“They were involved in conspiring and executing many terror attacks in the area. Several crime cases were registered against both the militants,” said the spokesman.

“Arms and ammunition including rifles were recovered from the site of encounter. All the incriminating materials including rifles and ammunition have been taken in the case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other terror cases. Police has registered a case in this regard,” he said.

“Citizens are requested not to venture inside the encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared off all the explosives materials if any,” a police spokesman in a statement said.
