The government has banned stone quarrying activities in Athwajan and Pantha Chowk. It has de-notified the entire stretch of quarries that run parallel to the highway.

The order has led the twin localities to break into protest. Thousands of people comprising men, women and children have blocked the road stretch between Pampore and Srinagar in protest against the ban of their principal occupation. They have created so much of blocks on the highway that even walking the distance is difficult.

A senior officer confirmed the ban. “The order was issued by the government because the two sites have become vulnerable  and can lead to human loses,” the officer said. “The order is a speaking order, it says the spots are closer to the entry into the capital city.”

Another senior officer said the order is available on the website but Kashmir Life failed to trace it anywhere.

The people involved directly with the activities, however, have been served the order. They had planned a massive protest. The tipper trucks that usually are involved with the activities had blocked the road and at various places the boulders have been used to block the road.

“It is nearly 1.5 kms that is directly involved,” one Pampore resident who came on foot to Srinagar, said. “There are men, women and children and they are all on the road.” The resident said the affected population is planning a major protest demonstration.

As the road has been blocked by the residents between the Pandretan and Sonawar, the traffic jam is already many kilometers long. Army convoys are also stranded. The police have reached the spot but has not been able to do anything, so far.
