Lady Set Ablaze by In-Laws in Shopian

In an inhuman act, a lady named Shokey Jan, 24, was set ablaze by her in-laws Friday afternoon.

Shokey was married to Ajaz Ahmad Sheikh, r/o Nadigam in South Kashmir’s Shopian.

“Ajaz along with his brother Mohammad Shaban Sheikh and his son Shabir first beat Shokey and then sprayed Kerosene on her and set her ablaze,” said Gh Mohi Ud Din, brother of Shokey.

“One of neighbours of Shokey informed us on telephone about this inhuman, brutal incident. They have set her on fire around 2 pm and then they locked her in a room till evening,” said Farooq Ahmad, another relative of Shokey.

Taking cognizance of the grave issue, Local MLA, Adv Mohammad Yusuf Bhat, reached district hospital Shopian enquired about the status of health of the victim of domestic abuse.

Police have set in motion its investigation in the serious matter.

After giving her first aid, the patient was rushed to SMHS Srinagar for specialised treatment. “The condition of the patient was very critical,” one of the relatives said.
