MeT Predicts Another Wet Spell From Monday

SRINAGAR: Cold wave conditions continued in the Kashmir Valley on Thursday as minimum temperatures remained below the freezing point.

An official from MeT department said, “As of today, weather most likely to remain mainly dry and cold in Jammu and Kashmir till January 3. Thereafter a spell of light to moderate snowfall is likely during January 4 and January 5 at many places of Kashmir, few places of  hilly area of Jammu and Zojila, Drass and hilly area of Zanskar and Leh district on January 5. Except above spell, there’s no forecast of any major snowfall till next 10 days from today.”

The ongoing 40-day long period of harsh winter cold known locally as the ‘Chillai Kalan’ will end on January 31.

Gulmarg in north Kashmir was the coldest place in the Valley where minimum temperature was minus 10.4 degrees celsius.

Srinagar, the summer capital of the J&K recorded a low of minus 5.9 while the mercury in Qazigund in south Kashmir settled at a low of minus 6.2 degrees Celsius.

The minimum night temperature at Pahalgam famous tourist-resort in south Kashmir settled at a low of minus 9.6 degrees Celsius.

Kokernag town recorded a low of minus 7.8 degrees Celsius while Kupwara town in north Kashmir registered a low of minus 5.8 degrees Celsius last night.

Jammu city recorded 2.8 degrees Celsius, Katra town 3.7, Batote 0.3, Banihal minus 1.4 and Bhaderwah minus 4.4 as the minimum temperatures.
