Dogri Poet Padma Sachdev Is No More

SRINAGAR: The modern Dogri poet, Padma Sachdev is no more. The 81-year-old poet was Padma Shri for her contributions to Hindi and Dogri.

She was unwell for some time and was reported dead this morning.

Padma was a Sahitya Academy Awardee also. Born in Jammu’s Purmandal locality in 1940, Padma was the eldest of three children of a Sanskrit scholar, professor Jai Dev Badu, who was later killed during the partition of India in 1947. She first married famous Dogri poet Vedpal Deep and later married singer Surinder Singh of the musical duo “Singh Bandhu” in 1966. She was living in Delhi.

Sachdev worked in All India Radio, Jammu as an announcer since 1961. It was there, she met singer Surinder Singh. She also served All India Radio, Mumbai.

Padma has written lyrics for various films. These include Prem Parbat, Aankhin Dekhi, and Saahas. She has authored nine books, mostly the collection of her poetry and a personal memoir. One of her poems was translated into English by Dr Karan Singh.
