Acquitted Tariq celebrates daughter’s first B’day 12 years after her birth

Srinagar: For last 12 years, Tariq Ahmad Dar, who was lodged in Delhi’s Tihar jail for his alleged involvement in Sarojni Nagar bomb blasts, harboured just one wish: to meet his daughter Fatima.

Born months after her father was picked from Pampore and taken to Delhi for interrogation in 2005, Fatima, now 12, lived under the impression that her father is away for business.

The only communication between the father and daughter was via phone, which Tariq was entitled to in Tihar jail.

“I always wanted to celebrate my birthday with my father,” said Fatima. “Allah has granted my wish finally.”

It was an emotionally charged scene when Tariq reached home last Friday, after spending 12 long years in Tihar jail, and met his daughter for the first time. Since then they are not letting each other out of sight.

After learning that he has become a father Tariq wrote a letter to his wife telling her to name his daughter Fatima.

Without her father around Fatima had to face lots of questions and queries, both at school and by her friends. “They used to ask me why my dad never visits home and things like that,” said Fatima. “Now I can answer all of them.”

The day Tariq was arrested he was on his way to meet his wife Razia, who waited for him at a gynaecologist’s clinic in Srinagar.

“I promised her to be with her in fifteen minutes, but she had to wait for 12 years instead,” said Tariq.
