LG Visits Slain TV Artist Amreen Bhat’s Residence At Chadoora

SRINAGAR: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday visited the house of TV artist Amreena Bhat, who was shot dead at her residence in Hushru village of Chadoora on last Wednesday.

Quoting a top official the news agency KNO reported that Sinha accompanied by senior officials met Amreena’s family at Hushru in Chadoora area of Budgam district and expressed his condolences to his parents and the family.

Amreena Bhat from Hushroo Chadoora along with her 10-year-old nephew were fired upon by the gunmen, leaving them wounded. However, Ambreena succumbed to her injuries on way to the SMHS hospital.

MeT Forecasts Brief Rain Spell At Scattered Places In J&K 

SRINAGAR: The weatherman on Sunday forecasted a brief spell of rain and thunderstorm at scattered places in Jammu and Kashmir towards late afternoon and evening.

“Currently, weather is mainly clear in most parts of J&K,” said a meteorological department official here, adding, “A brief spell of Rain/Thunderstorm may occur at scattered places towards late afternoon/evening.”

Quoting the official news agency GNS reported that Srinagar received recorded a low of 13.7°C against 13.2°C on the previous night. The temperature, he said, was above normal by 1.7°C during this time of the year for the summer capital.

Qazigund recorded a low of 11.2°C against 13.0°C on the previous night. The temperature was 0.5°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.

Pahalgam recorded a minimum of 6.7°C against 10.3°C on the previous night. The temperature was 0.6°C above normal for the famous resort in south Kashmir during this time of the season, he said.

Kokernag recorded a low of 11.1°C against 12.1°C on the previous night. It was 0.5°C above normal during this time of the season for the place in south Kashmir, the official said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 4.5°C against 4.0°C on the previous night, the official said. While 7.1°C is normal for the world-famous skiing resort during this time of the season, the official said that the temperature was 2.6°C below normal for the place in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a low of 11.7°C against 12.8°C on the previous night. The temperature was 1.1°C above normal for the district, the official told Global News Service.

Jammu recorded a low of 23.6°C against 22.6°C on the previous night, the official said. The temperature was 1.3°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said. Banihal recorded a low of 12.2°C, Batote recorded a low of 13.8°C while Bhadarwah recorded minimum of 12.8°C, the official said.

Drone Shot Down

SRINAGAR: A drone, attached with a payload, was shot down in Talli Hariya Chak area in Kathua early this morning, officials said.

“On basis of a drone activity observed in the area of Talli Hariya Chak under police station Rajbagh in district Kathua, a search party of police was sent to the specified site which shot down the drone,” news agency GNS quoted the officials as having said.

“The drone was found attached with a payload and accordingly bomb disposal experts were sought to screen it,” they further said.

Record Footfalls Trigger Space Shortage, Home Stays May Be Introduced

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir government is mulling to revive home stays in Kashmir amid the tourism boom to avoid a space crunch as all hotels, lodges and guest houses are booked for the next two months.

In the past four months, 7,00, 000, tourists visited Kashmir breaking the past ten year’s record. This year, March month recorded 1.80 lakh visitors, the first time in the past one decade.

Quoting Secretary Tourism J&K, Sarmad Hafeez news agency KNO reported that the huge tourist influx continues and all hotels, lodges and guest houses at present are booked and have advance booking for at least the next two months.

“We are glad to see that the locals who had shut their hotel business are once again reviving it. Many people who had closed their hotels in view of losses are again opening it. Those who have opened their hotels are having huge bookings,” Hafeez said. He said that the government is planning to revive home stays for which fresh guidelines are being worked out and will be issued shortly.

“Homestays had been a major attraction of tourists in the early 70’s and 80’s. We are trying to revive it in view of increasing tourist footfall,” he said. “We are also increasing room capacity at resorts and tourist destinations to avoid space crunch. We are watching the footfall of tourists closely and accordingly steps to accommodate them are being taken in collaboration with various Development Authorities.” “In Srinagar, SMC has been directed to deploy more men to ensure gardens and other tourist places are cleaned properly and waste managed as per scientific management,” he said.

Asked if the tourist footfall has posed many challenges like traffic congestion in cities and tourist destinations besides waste management, the Secretary of Tourism said that various development authorities are giving special focus to cleaning the trash leftover by the tourists. “A proper waste disposal system is being followed and more people have been pressed into service to keep the tourist resorts clean. Guidelines have been displayed on signboards at various tourist destinations asking tourists not to litter and not to make the resort dirty,” he said.

Regarding traffic congestion, officials said that there has been a 100 per cent increase in vehicular traffic due to the huge tourist arrivals.  “Srinagar is bearing the brunt of huge tourist influx vis a vis increase in the number of vehicles. The traffic department has been advised to deploy more manpower at crucial junctions to facilitate vehicles ferrying tourists,” Hafeez said.

Youth Found Dead

SRINAGAR: A youth from Gudoora Ganderbal who had went to water his agricultural land last night has been found dead on Saturday morning.

Quoting an official news agency KNO reported that a 28-year-old youth namely Umer Mohi-ud-din Tantray son of Gh. Mohi-ud-din resident of Gadoora went to water his agricultural land last night. On Saturday morning, when his family went to search him, they found him dead in his agricultural land.

He added that the dead body has been taken to District Hospital for postmortem and further investigation has been taken up.

Two Killed After Minibus Falls Into River

SRINAGAR: The driver and conductor of a matador were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in fell into Tawi River in Bikram Chowk area of Jammu.

Quoting a police officer news agency GNS reported that the matador (JK02AM-7260) coming from Bikram Chowk side fell into Tawi bridge during the intervening night of May 27 and 28, resulting in the on the spot death driver and conductor. One among them has been identified as Ankush Kumar son of the late Ved Parkash of Pouni Reasi. The identity of another person was not “properly” known yet and is being fully established. He said proceedings have been launched.

A police official told said that a case been registered and further investigation taken up.

India Records 2,685 New Covid Cases, 33 Deaths In 24 Hours

SRINAGAR: India recorded a mild dip in Covid-19 cases with 2,685 fresh infections being reported in last 24 hours, against 2,710 count of the previous day, the Union Health Ministry said on Saturday morning.

In the same period, 33 Covid-related fatalities pushed the nationwide death toll to 5,24,572.

Meanwhile, the active caseload rose reporting 16,308 cases, accounting for 0.04 per cent of the country’s total positive cases.

The recovery of 2,158 patients in the last 24 hours took the cumulative tally to 4,26,09,335. Consequently, the recovery rate stands at 98.75 per cent.

Meanwhile, India’s Daily Positivity rate has risen to 0.60 per cent, while the Weekly Positivity Rate in the country currently stands at 0.54 per cent.

Also in the same period, a total of 4,47,637 tests were conducted across the country, increasing the overall to 84.93 crore.

As of Saturday morning, the Covid-19 vaccination coverage exceeded 193.13 crore, achieved via 2,44,45,929 sessions.

Over 3.36 crore adolescents have been administered with a first dose of Covid-19 jab since the beginning of vaccination drive for this age bracket. IANS
