KU’s South Campus holds workshop on ‘Women, Law and Society’

The Department of Education at Kashmir University’s South Campus, Islamabad, in collaboration with Cross Bow Miles organized a one-day workshop on “Women, Law and Society—Challenges & Issues.”

The spokesman in a statement said that the workshop was aimed at highlighting and deliberating upon pressing issues faced by women in the society with special focus on creating awareness for women’s safety and empowerment through financial and digital literacy.

“CrossBow Miles is a mass outreach and engagement platform tailored for cause-driven campaigns for women empowerment and other social issues. It is conceptualised by Srishti Bakshi who embarked on 3800-km on-foot journey across the country and has reached Kashmir for the last leg of the campaign,” the spokesman said.

The spokesman said that speaking at the workshop, Srishti Bakshi shared with the audience her effort aimed to sensitise citizens about the gender divide in the country that can be combated by empowering women with digital and financial literacy.

Students, scholars and faculty members of various Departments of South Campus and Women’s Study Centre, Social Works Department and Women’s College Islamabad were among those who participated in the workshop, the spokesman added.

Bilal Kaloo, Department of Education, South Campus coordinated the workshop. Dr Ashfaq Ahmad Zarri, Director South Campus applauded Srishti for her extraordinary accomplishment to complete 3800-km walk from Kanyakumari to Kashmir along with voicing and raising awareness related to women issues. He further asserted that debates and discussions on social issues in academic institutions hold a lot of promise and potential to solve the problems faced by our society.

Talish Rey and Suniti Ojha, advocates at the Supreme Court deliberated upon legal aspects related to crime against women.

Gulzara Masoodi, well known social activist and Member, Jammu and Kashmir State Commission for Women, said that education is the biggest tool for women empowerment and it would bring about a lot of change in the society, the spokesman said.

Shifting of civil secretariat will lead to total annihilation: KEA

Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) Sunday blamed government authorities for its failure to save culture and commercial importance of the historic city.

KEA co-chairman Farooq Ahmed Dar in a statement said that “The shifting of civil secretariat and main administrative offices will lead to total annihilation of the core city whose damages will be irreparable”.

He said moving en-mass all the core activities merely on account of the clumsy ground of high land value and low intensity uses is the irrational and unwise proposal. It will be the total annihilation of city core whose damages will be irreparable.

KEA warned that if the government fails to take out measures for the preservation of heritage value of Srinagar City, they will organize a wave of protests against government’s apathy.

KEA co-chairman Farooq Ahmed Dar in a statement said that the successive government ignored the commercial and cultural importance of the city and failed in the development of a city.

“The successive governments planned a conspiracy against the city and put its development on hold,” Dar said.

He said that the authorities are putting hurdles to common people of Lal Chowk and traders.

He said commercial establishments and Government offices like roads and buildings sheikh Bagh, sadder Court, KMD, Bus stand, Batmaloo bus where already shifted from the city and now they have proposed to shift the Civil Secretariat and the Administrative offices.

“Shifting of government offices will have a negative impact on the trade and authorities should shun this look into it,” Dar said

Dar urged intellectuals, civil society lawyers and other businesses to realize the seriousness of the issue and put pressure on the administration.

CS finalizes arrangements for oath ceremony

Chief Secretary, B.B Vyas on Sunday chaired a meeting at Convention Centre to finalize the arrangements for the oath-taking ceremony being held on Monday for induction of legislators into the Jammu and Kashmir Council of Ministers.

Principal Secretary to Governor Umang Narula, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Rohit Kansal, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu Hemant Kumar Sharma, Additional Commissioner, Jammu Rehana Batool, Deputy Commissioner, Jammu Kumar Rajeev Ranjan, ADGP Security Muneer Khan, IGP Jammu Dr S.D Singh Jamwal, Director Floriculture Babila Rakwal, Joint Director Information, Jammu Naresh Kumar and officers from PHE, police and district administration were present at the meeting.

The spokesman in a statement said that the meeting discussed the arrangements related to seating capacity, security, traffic regulation, Public Address System, sanitation, decoration, power supply and drinking water supply.

The Chief Secretary directed the security agencies to ensure foolproof security arrangements in and around the venue. He further asked for identifying sufficient space for the parking of vehicles to avoid a traffic jam.

He directed the Power Development Department for uninterrupted power supply during the proceedings of the ceremony and making arrangements for backup to deal with any emergency. The Jammu Municipal Corporation was directed to ensure cleanliness in and around the Centre, besides deputing workers for cleaning the toilets.

The Information Department was asked to provide Public Address System for backup and ensuring adequate transportation facility for media persons for smooth coverage of the event.

The Health Department was asked to set up a Critical Care Unit and stationing ambulances at the Centre to deal with any health emergency. The Floriculture Department was asked to decorate the stage and the podiums.

Later, the Chief Secretary also took a round of the premises of the Convention Centre to oversee the preparations being made for the successful conduct of the ceremony.

Tragedy averted as Air India Delhi-Srinagar flight makes emergency landing

An Air India flight from Delhi to Srinagar carrying 180 passengers made an emergency landing at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International airport after the flight AI-825 developed an engine snag.

Reports said that the incident comes just a few days after an Air India flight AI-476 made an emergency landing in Jaipur on April 7. The Airbus A321-200 plane from Jodhpur to Delhi had to be diverted after the crew got intimation about a landing gear issue. All one hundred and fifty-eight people onboard were unharmed in the accident.

Air India was in news just a few days back when one of its flights experienced severe turbulence mid-air leading to chaos in the aircraft. The incident took place on board the Boeing 787 Dreamliner (VTANI) soon after take off from Amritsar to Delhi on April 19. Three passengers sustained minor injuries in the flight and some overhead oxygen masks also got deployed. A window panel also fell off. The turbulence continued for 10 to 15 minutes.

The flight had over 240 passengers when the incident happened. The officials said the flight experienced turbulence soon after take-off when the altitude was around 15,000 feet due to bad weather.

In 64 years of life, Shabir Shah gives 31 to Jail

Chief of Jammu Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party (JKDFP) Shabir Shah has become icon of the ongoing freedom struggle for fearlessly advocating ‘Right to Self Determination’ of the people of the Kashmir.This was stated by the participants of an event organized to mark the completion of 31 years of incarceration (from time to time) of Shabir Shah. The event was presided over by JKDFP Secretary General Moulana Mohammad Abdullah Tari, the spokesman said.

The spokesman in a statement quoted the participants said that the ideology of freedom which was adopted by Shabir Shah in his youthful days is being honestly followed by him till date when he is 64. The result is that imperialistic powers always find an excuse to put him behind bars. The man, who has chosen the path of struggle as his way of living, is steadfastly writing a new history of political resistance. “Presently, when Shabir Shah has completed 31 years of incarceration, he is undergoing in solitary confinement in a small cell of Tihar jail Delhi with an open commode in it,” the spokesman said.

“The office-bearers, members and activists of JKDFP and a large number of his admirers across the religious and regional lines reiterate to take the political ideology of Shabir Shah forward and will leave no stone unturned in the completion of his mission of’ freedom,” the spokesman added.

“We fully support the political stance of our incarcerated leader that Kashmir is a political and humanitarian dispute which must be resolved taking into consideration its political and historical aspects and the will of its people. This is the only way out to end the ongoing bloodshed in the disputed region and confrontation between the two nuclear neighbours of the region,” said a spokesman.

“We are not frightened or terrified of the illegal and illogical imprisonment of our leader but in fact are concerned about his ailing health. The frontline leader of the freedom struggle is suffering from many serious ailments in the jail. We repeatedly cautioned the authorities in Delhi and their local agents to provide suitable medical facilities to our leader whose life is otherwise in danger due to the ailments.The irony is that despite repeated directions from the judiciary as well, the jail authorities did not provide him with the necessary medical facilities which Shabir Shah needs urgently,” the spokesman added.

The spokesman said that the seriousness of his ailments can be understood by the fact that Shabir Shah is not able to remain standing for more than five minutes. A team of doctors recently conducted a test of Shabir Shah which was related to neurology. The test and monitoring was conducted for 14 hours inside the jail. His Holter and other heart-related tests with negative results were also repeated recently. Taking into consideration the falling health of Shabir Shah and concern shown by the people of all walks of life, JKDFP has decided to issue health bulletins about Shabir Shah twice in a month.

“On this occasion, JKDFP salutes all those incarcerated leaders along with Shabir Shah, activists and common people who are languishing in different jails since long only for their political stance about Kashmir dispute. Since none of the allegations against them including Shabir Shah has been proved so far, so we call their continuous ‘incarceration’ as a political vendetta,” the spokesman said.

Bakura residents cry for school upgradation

A government school in district Ganderbal district is awaiting its upgradation from middle school to High School level for more than five decades.

Government boys middle school Bakura, one of the oldest educational institutions in the district, was established as a primary school in 1953, said residents.

“Though the school was upgraded from primary school to middle  School level in April 2003, it has not been upgraded to high school level so far,” Muhammad Yousuf, a local resident said.

As per the locals, one boy’s high school is at Shuhama Alusteng, but there is no girls high school in the vicinity, the nearest girls high school is at Pandach area which is 10 km away from Bakura.

The villagers said that the village is populated with more than 2000 residents is devoid of high school and they have been demanding for the upgradation of the school since long time various students drop out after 8th standards because of this problem.

They said that a large number of students are not able to continue the education after the 8th class especially the female students because of the lack of facilities of schooling in the vicinity.

“We appeal the education minister Syed Altaf Bukhari to look at our genuine demand,” a group of girls students said.

Mushtaq Ahmad war the village head said “we have visited the MLA Ganderbal in February 2018 for up-gradation of the school, he wrote a letter to the chief Education officer Ganderbal and recommended for the upgradation of school as there was no girls high school in the area but till date no order has been issued for upgradation of school.

Talking to Kashmir Life Chief Education Officer CEO Ganderbal said that the MLA has sent us the recommendation letter and the case for the upgradation of school is under process.

Budgam village decries water scarcity

Residents of the Waterwani village of central Kashmiri’s Budgam district face acute shortage of safe drinking water from a very long period of time, thus putting their lives at risk of waterborne diseases.

The village Waterwani is six kilometres away from the district headquarters and only two kilometres from the urban service reservoir, Dadina Budgam.

People of the area claim that the water supplied to them is not safe for drinking. The length is leaking at many places. In past, many times the people of the area have protested various and registered their claims to higher authorities including PHE department and District Commissioners office. “It looks like that our repeated pleas fell on deaf ears,” said Ghulam Rasool, a local.

But the people were hopeful that their problem will be addressed and will get the safe drinking water once the urban service reservoir at Dadina will be functional.

Shuja Abbas Qazi, a student of Law said, “From the very first day of lying this master plan we were promised drinking water from the scheme. Even we objected the lying of this pipeline through our village but the then AEE claimed of having proper orders to provide our village water from Sukhnag water scheme’s nearest service reservoir, but later on it was denied by authorities.”

“We protested a few times to get water from nearest water reservoir which is just 2 km away from our village, as the water which we receive becomes dirty in rains and is not available 24 hrs. We have put our demands in front of authorities but they took no action,” said Sajjad Hussaini, a local youth.

Talking to Kashmir life, Ghulam Ahmed Beigh, Executive Engineer, PHE Department, Budgam said, he will look into it and take up the matter on priority.

Executive Engineer master plan, Basharat Ahmad said, “We had never such plans to provide water supply from Sukhnag scheme to said village,” adding that we are trying to end the woes of people.
