National Survey Paints Grim Picture Of Learning Outcomes In J&K Schools

SRINAGAR: A National level survey has painted a grim picture of the ability of students admitted in J&K schools while assessing the learning outcomes of the pupils.

According to the news agency KNO, the national level survey, carried by NCERT and supported by UNICEF, has revealed that the performance of the students in J&K schools to comprehend the English language has remained below national average.

During the oral language comprehension in English, the ability of the students to understand the meaning of language through spoken stories and pictures was done by the surveyors.

The task consisted of listening to different texts of one to three sentences and matching the content of each of the texts with given pictures.

However, the results have revealed that the 77 percent students are able to listen and comprehend four to five texts of varying lengths while the national average performance of students is 85 percent.

In phonological awareness, the students were assessed on the basis of their ability to identify the sounds within a given word.

The task was based on identifying the initial and final sounds in grade level words.

The survey has revealed that against 95 percent national average only 85 percent students identified at least one initial sound in grade level words.

Also, 78 percent students have correctly identified at least one final sound in grade level words against the National average performance of students at 93 percent.

“Around 14 percent of students were not able to identify the initial sound and final sound in any of the given grade level words while the national level performance is 4 percent,” revealed the survey.

It has also revealed that 88 percent students are able to read 80-100 letters correctly and fluently against the national average performance of 95 percent.

Notably, the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has most aptly pointed out that the ability to read and write, and perform basic operations with numbers was a necessary foundation and an indispensable prerequisite for all future schooling and lifelong learning.

As a crucial step towards strengthening efforts for Foundational Literacy and Numeracy, the Ministry of Education has conducted a large-scale nationwide Foundational Learning Study (FLS) in collaboration with the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) during March, 2022.

The study is first of its kind in the world as it aims to set-up benchmarks for reading with comprehension in 20 Indian languages.

The objectives of studying and assessing the learning outcomes is to provide reliable and valid data about Grade three students to know what they are able to do in foundational literacy and numeracy and the extent of learning outcomes being achieved.

“The data derived from the FLS Study would help in establishing a baseline for the NIPUN Bharat mission. The study also aims to establish reading proficiency benchmarks for fluency and comprehension for each of the languages (20 in number) being assessed under the study and proficiency benchmarks for numeracy,” the survey report reads.

Besides English, the students have poorly performed in mathematics as well.

As per the survey, only 50 percent students are able to read up to 9999 against the national average performance of students at 64 percent.

The survey has revealed that the students are lacking basic ability in doing addition, subtraction, division and multiplication of numbers.

“Learners lack the most basic knowledge and they generally cannot complete the most basic skills,” the survey has revealed.

30 Years After Submergence, Bihar Mosque Re-emerges from The Dam

SRINAGAR: More than thirty years after it was submerged in a dam, a mosque in Bihar has resurfaced. While the experts say the re-emergence of the mosque is a key indicator of the drought-like situation in Bihar, the faithful see it as no less than a miracle and throng the site.

Noori Masjid in a Bihar district submerged in water after the area was converted into a dam. With the water level lowest ever, the 120-year-old mosque re-emerged intact in September 2022.

The mosque remained underwater for thirty years with barely its domes visible from a distance. Now the praying space is fully visible and even accessible.

A submerged mosque is located at Chiraila village of Rajauli block in Bihar’s Nawada district. It got submerged after the area comprising around 40 hamlets was depopulated and converted into the Phulwaria Dam reservoir.

Reports quoting senior citizens from the area said it was named Noori Masjid, which submerged after the reservoir became operational in 1985. It existed before 1979 when the work on the dam started. After the government acquired the entire area and relocated the population of Hardiya village of Nawada district elsewhere, the mosque was left untouched and it eventually submerged and remained under the water. What is interesting is that the mosque is almost 120 years old structure and still survived. Its architecture suggests the mosque was built in the latter part of Mughal India.

“Earlier, when the water level used to decrease, only a part of the dome of the mosque was visible and people were unable to place what it was all about. Now when they see the mosque out in the open when the earth is completely dry their curiosity is at rest,” a report published on a Muslim news-related portal said. “Now they can easily walk to see the mosque and relish the architecture of this building. The height of the mosque from the ground to the upper dome is about 30 feet.”

People who got into the mosque said it is completely intact. The submergence of thirty years has no or little impact on the structure. The mosque’s main entrance is damaged but the ruins remain. The people are visiting the site continuously even though a snake was located in the mosque by a blogger.

Dancer Dies on Stage, Was Performing on A Devotional Song

SRINAGAR: In a video clip that is viral on social media, a young dancer dies on stage while performing a devotional song. The incident was reported from Bishnah in Jammu, reports appearing in the media said.

Reports said that Yogesh Gupta, aged around 20, was dressed as Goddess Parvati and was performing a devotional song that was being sung by a devotional singer.

The artist was performing in a programme related to Ganesh Puja dancing-cum-musical opera at a night Jagran in Kotha Sonia hamlet of Bishnah. Locally known as Tanshu son Kuldeep Gupta, he was a resident Bhor area in Satwari, Jammu.

The video shows the young man suddenly sitting down on his knees while performing. He then laid down on the stage. He is seen making attempts to get up by pushing his arms and legs. People watching him perform felt his sitting down and laying was part of the script and performance. However, when many minutes passed by and he still did not move and the song was going on, a fellow performer dressed up as Lord Shiva went to check up on him.

It was at this stage that the audience knew that he was no more. Though efforts were made to revive him, everything failed. He was soon moved to a health facility where the doctors said the young man has died of cardiac arrest. He had already lost his ‘golden’ minutes – the time that requires a medical response in such situations.

150 Detainees Shifted Out From Jammu Kashmir Jails, Reports

SRINAGAR: As many as 150 detinees have been shifted to outside jails from Jammu and Kashmir, a Jammu newspaper reported exclusively. The detainees are militants from Kashmir and Pakistan.

They have been shifted to Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and New Delhi. The newspaper reported that this was aimed at “effectively” checking the “deradicalization of prisoners in Jammu and Kashmir jails, especially by the Pakistani militants”.

“Majority of the militants shifted from Jammu and Kashmir were lodged in high-security Kot Bhalwal jail under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA),” the Daily Excelsior quoted sources saying. It added that the “shifting of Pakistani militants outside will help overcome radicalization of other detenues as well as carrying out militant activities from inside the prison through mobile telephones etc”.

The newspaper said that the jail authorities in Uttar Pradesh, New Delhi and Haryana have been asked to completely segregate the Pakistani and Kashmiri militants besides the PSA detenues to ensure that they are not able to meet each other.

The sources told the newspaper further: “Mainly those separatists and militants are being shifted to outside jails who the administration feels could radicalize ordinary criminals in the prisons or those who could instigate subversive activities from inside the jails using mobile telephones and social media.”

The move, the sources said, will break the “network of the militants being run from the prisons” and “act as deterrence for future.”
