Soura youth goes missing, family urges him to return home

A 25-year-old youth from Bilal Colony, Soura, Srinagar district of central Kashmir has gone missing even as police said it was investigating “all angles” into it.

Reports said that Nadib Hanief Khan son of Mohammad Hanief Khan left his home at Bilal Colony, Soura for offering prayers on Friday last and is missing since then.

“He should return home as his mother is suffering from cancer and if he is with somebody he should be let go on a humanitarian basis,” Mohammad Hanif Khan, Nadib’s father, told news agency GNS. “Nadib’s family comprises his parents and a brother”.

The family has also submitted a missing report with the local police station Soura in this regard.

A police officer concerned told GNS that a missing report has been received from the family yesterday and investigations have been initiated.

“We are investigating all angles,” the police officer said, responding in affirmative to a query whether investigations entail the possibility of Nadib having joined militancy.

The youth according to family sources has done some course related to mobile and computers repairs besides iPhone programming in Mumbai.

Kupwara Councillors protest against lack of basic amenities during training programme

Municipal councillors from Kupwara district of north Kashmir on Tuesday staged a protest in press enclave, Srinagar against the government authorities for not being able to provide the necessary facilities and security during their training programme in Srinagar.

Scores of the councillors from various areas of the Kupwara district, led by President Municipal Committee, Handwara, assembled at press colony shouting slogans in favour of their demand. The protesting councillors said that a three-day training programme for the municipal councillors of all the districts of Kashmir was launched by the government at Institute of Management, Public Administration & Rural Development (IMPA) a month ago, but during the training, the councillors allegedly had to face many problems.

“There was no accommodation for any of us, no transportation and other promised facilities as the government has already provided funds for that matter,” said a protesting councillor from Handwara.

The furious councillors added that they all were left on roads till 9:00 PM, as there was no accommodation or transport facility available for them. “We are ready to work for the benefit of people but not at the cost of our security”, said a female councillor from Handwara.

The president added that despite repeated requests to the Divisional Commissioner and additional commissioner of the state to look into the matter, there were no initiatives taken by them which ultimately led us to hit the streets. The councillors threatened to resign from their jobs if their demands are not fulfilled.

Lauding the professionalism of Army, Governor emphasised sharp vigil along the Line of Control and IB and maintenance of high ethical standards during discharge of duties.

Father arrested for trying to bury his baby alive

Srinagar

In a bizarre incident of its kind, a south Kashmir resident was arrested and later bailed out in the Nowhatta area old city where he was allegedly trying to ‘bury’ his infant alive on Monday afternoon.

The person was identified as Manzoor Hussain Banyari, son of Misri Banyari, a resident of Shamsipora Shopian.

Sajad Ahmad Shah, SP north City, informed Kashmir Life that the said person was caught by the locals and handed over to PS Nowhatta after he was trying to abandon his infant. “The baby had some congenital deformities and the said person told police that he was very poor and could not treat his newly born baby. The case stands registered in police station Nowhatta under FIR number 72/2018 under section 317 RPC,” Shah said.

The said person was later released on bail and the baby, according to police, has been shifted to hospital for treatment.

The baby, according to reports is admitted in the GB Pant hospital. His mother is recovering in the Lal Ded hospital where she gave birth to the child.

KCCI concerned over Shimla incident, seek fair investigation

The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Tuesday expressed outrage on mob attack on Kashmiri shopkeepers in Rohru Tehsil, Shimla.

The spokesman said that miscreants, armed with hammers, sticks and iron rods have reportedly broken the shutters of the shops and looted and ransacked the goods.

We have been watching with growing concern, the selective targeting of Kashmiri businessmen, especially Handicraft dealers/Pheriwalla’s on social media through videos of hate speeches and physical violence, some exhorting people not to buy Kashmiri goods. To our knowledge, no investigation or action has been taken in any of the incidents. A hostile environment is being created and attempts made to stoke sectarian violence in various places across the country.

The incident in Shimla is the result of the hate propaganda and we appeal to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of the country to send a clear message for safeguarding and protection of businessmen and students from Jammu and Kashmir wherever they may choose to be.

The KCC&I demands that the Governor’s administration depute a high-level special team to Shimla including representatives from the KCC&I for assessing the losses and to ensure that the lives and property of Kashmiri Traders are safe and secure. We also humbly appeal to the saner elements of the society, including members of the business community, intellectuals, intelligentsia, civil society and others not to remain silent. It’s the responsibility of all secular-minded members of the society to take steps to protect the rights of Kashmiri people to freely conduct their businesses anywhere without fear or intimidation.

The KCC&I also demands that the guilty should be booked under more stringent provisions of criminal law. We find it strange that despite videos of the vandalism readily available on the social media, the Himachal Police has failed to make any arrests so far. This clearly points to goons being patronized by the State, which is deplorable. Such incidents cannot be allowed to be business as usual and remedial steps need to be taken for avoiding their repetition anywhere else.

While the KCC&I appreciates the decision of the Himachal Police to engage the services of forensic scientists to “scientifically probe” the episode of killing of a bovine animal; we believe that it would also serve the ends of justice to take action against the miscreants who have openly indulged in taking the law in their own hands.

The KCC&I also demands that the Jammu and Kashmir Police register FIR’s and take legal action against people indulging in hate speeches and physical violence and freely spewing venom on the social media against members of the Kashmiri business community operating throughout the country.

Jamia mostly locked in Mehbooba’s tenure, condemnation quiet ironical: Hurriyat (M)

The Hurriyat (M) on Tuesday said that the phone call of former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti to its chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq condemning the Jamia incident which she is broadcasting in media for obvious reasons, is quite ironical as it was during her tenure as CM that the mosque was most barred to people for offering of Friday prayers.

The spokesman in a statement said that in 2016 it was locked down for three months, in 2017 for the first time even Juma tul Vida congregation during Ramadan was not allowed and in 2018, for 16 Friday’s prayers were barred in the mosque! On all these days Mirwaiz was either put under house arrest or in jail as in 2016.

The Hurriyat spokesman said if Ms Mufti during her tenure as CM had the same feelings towards Jamia Masjid which she calls “the landmark and most important religious and social institution of Kashmir “at whose desecration she is “outraged” today,  and  had showed the courage to stand up for the religious rights of the Muslims of valley instead of presiding over the bans and bars on Jamia Masjid then her “outrage “would at least have been sincere.

Youth dies after hit by falling tree in Pattan

Srinagar

A youth died on Monday evening after he was hit by a falling tree in Pattan area of north Kasmir’s Baramulla district.

Reports said that a youth identified as Fazil Ahmed Bhat, son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, came under a falling tree when the locals were cutting trees in Palhalan area of Pattan, resulting in serious injurious to the youth.

Soon after the incident, the injured youth was rushed to nearby hospital for the treatment; however, he succumbed to injuries at the hospital.
