Yasin MalikCommenting upon the proposals of Pakistani premier Mian Nawaz Sharief for establishment of lasting peace and prosperity at UN General Assembly, JKLF chief Muhammad Yasin Malik Thursday said that proposals like withdrawal of forces from Jammu Kashmir, resolution of Jammu Kashmir issue for peace and prosperity, accepting Kashmiris as prime party to the dispute etc. are positive and reasonable.

In a party statement, Yasin said, “Kashmir issue is a humanitarian issue that has at one hand consumed three generations of Kashmiris and on other hand is constantly putting people of India and Pakistan in a continuous conflict, anarchy, division and clash and hence has jeopardized their prosperity and welfare as well.”

“Kashmir is a land that has the largest concentration of military and forces and which is facing a continuous threat of war and clashes and there will be nothing big and good than demilitarizing this land,” Malik said.

Malik added, “people of Jammu Kashmir are the owners of Kashmir and prime party to the dispute on Jammu Kashmir and no solution can be found by ignoring them or pushing them to the wall. He said that for a peaceful and prosper sub-continent, India and Pakistan will have to make every effort for a  resolution of Jammu Kashmir issue and for that inclusion of Kashmiris in the dialogue process and finding a solution that is in accordance to the sacrifices, aspirations and wishes of Kashmiris is necessary.”

The statement further said, “Malik hoped that the positive proposals of Pakistani Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharief will be reciprocated by the other side and will take positive steps for establishment of real peace and prosperity.”

Meanwhile, JKLF chief Yasin Malik paid rich tribute to slain Bilal Ahmad Beigh (Babloo), “Babloo was martyred by Indian forces in custody in year 1999,” the statement said. “His sacrifices and struggle can never be forgotten and we all today remember him with wet eyes and pray for his heavenly abode.”

Senior Hurriyat (g) leader and president of J&K Anjuman-e-Sharie Shian, Aga Syed Hassan Thursday termed the statement of Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief at UN General Assembly as a “determination of reconciliatory spirit”.

“Political solutions to all conflicts are necessary in view of hovering terroristic threats over the world which results that oppressed nations are being lured towards extremism,” Aga Syed Hassan said in his party statement.

Hailing the Prime Minister Pakistan’s “four-point proposal for peace” which concludes “respect and observance of ceasefire from both sides of LoC, withdrawal of troops from Jammu and Kashmir and fruitful dialogue over Kashmir dispute on the basis of UN resolutions” as ‘realistic ideology’, Aga Hassan said, “solution of Kashmir issue is evitable if government of India and Pakistan is truly sincere in welfare of millions of people because the conflict between two countries is causing irreparable damage to their economy.”

Welcoming the sincere invitation of Prime Minister Pakistan Nawaz Sharief to resolve Kashmir Dispute, the statement said, “Aga advised government of India to react positively rather than spending more time and solve long pending Kashmir issue according to the aspirations of Kashmiris.”

State Govt’s Beef Move to Supreme Court A Coalition-Saving Step, Er Rashid Says

KL NEWS NEWTWORK

SRINAGAR

Terming the state government’s attempt to move to Supreme Court over beef ban issue as an excuse from debating the issue in the Assembly, Independent MLA Er Rashid Thursday said that state govt is complicating the issue as it is within the authority of state legislature to abolish, amend or make a law that it deems good in the interest of its people.

“If government really wants issue to be resolved amicably it should evolve a consensus within all political parties and must make every party understand that the issue pertains to Fundamental Rights and religious freedom of Muslim community,” Er Rashid said.

It is ironic, he said, that government on one hand is challenging the High Court verdict in Supreme Court but seems very much reluctant to revoke the ban itself through State Legislature by passing the bill.

“This all is being done to buy the time and with the hope that Supreme Court may uphold the High Court order and State Government will then throw the onus on Supreme Court and find a hon’ble exit for itself, thus may not leave any scope for revoking the ban,” Rashid said.

It is unacceptable and undemocratic that something which government can do itself is being dragged to Supreme Court only to save the coalition, he said.

Meanwhile Rashid’s party (AIP) is holding a peaceful sit-in in Srinagar tomorrow to persuade MLAs of all parties to support the bill seeking revocation of ban on beef. “The sit-in will start at 9am in Partap-Park at LalChowk,” he said.

Anti-Tobacco Campaign Catches Pace in Srinagar

KL NEWS NETWORK

SRINAGAR

Chief Education Officer (CEO), Srinagar has asked all his subordinate officers to submit monthly reports on action taken against COTPA violators in and around educational Institutions in the district.

“All Principals and Headmasters are advised to submit a monthly report to the CEO Srinagar office for follow up so that the sale and use of tobacco is curtailed around educational Institutions,” the order issued here said.

The Principals, ZEO’s and Headmasters shall also ensure that compliances under Section 6 (a), (b) of COTPA Act 2003 is ensured and all the educational Institutions are certified as ‘tobacco free institutions’, the order said.

Pertinently, as per Section 6 of the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003 (COTPA), there is a ban on the sale of tobacco to and by minors and prohibition on sale of tobacco products within 100 yards of educational institutions.

Under Section 6 (b) of COTPA, the sale of tobacco products is prohibited in an area within a radius of 100 yards of any educational institutions and mandatory signage in this regard should be displayed prominently near the main gate and on the boundary wall of the school institute.

“It is heartening to see that office of the Chief Education Officer Srinagar has come forward to protect the health of children by supporting COTPA enforcement at the ground level,” said Afzal Makhdomi, J&K Consultant for Tobacco Control, Voluntary Health Association of India (VHAI).

According to Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) carried out by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India conducted amongst the students in India, reveals that 14.6% of 13 –15 year old students are using tobacco in India. Of those, 8.1% of students smoked tobacco. As many as 11% of all male students surveyed were found to be users of smoking or smokeless tobacco, while 6% of female students used smokeless tobacco and 3.7% smoked tobacco.

According to the MoHFW, nearly 37% children in India initiate smoking before the age of 10 and each day, 5500 children begin tobacco use. The findings of these studies highlight the need for targeted interventions among youth in general and students in particular, especially given the marketing overdrive of the tobacco industry to promote the use of tobacco among youth.
