SRINAGAR: BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav on Thursday held daylong deliberations with party workers amid the raking of “Gupkar declaration” by regional parties and security issues faced by Valley-based ground workers.
The closed-door deliberations continued till late in the evening and party leaders present at the meeting said the security of BJP workers and the emerging political scenario in the Valley were discussed.
“Madhav held different sessions throughout the day with district presidents and senior leaders of the UT. He had mainly come to check developments on the ground but did not speak much. He just took feedback from everyone. We submitted a memorandum demanding security for every political worker irrespective of party affiliation. More meetings are expected tomorrow where discussion on political developments is expected,” newspaper The Tribune quoted a senior BJP leader wishing not to be named as having said.
Madhav, who had previously played a key role in the formation of the BJP-PDP coalition, arrived here days after six main political parties, including the National Conference (NC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Congress, announced that they stood by the “Gupkar declaration” and would jointly fight for the restoration of Article 370.
During his first visit here in October last year after the abrogation of Article 370, Madhav had maintained that the regional parties would only be allowed to do “routine politics” like seeking restoration of statehood to J&K.
Earlier this year on July 12, Madhav along with MoS Jitender Singh, BJP national vice-president Avinash Rai Khanna and J&K president Ravinder Raina had visited Bandipora in north Kashmir to mourn the killing of three party workers. Recently, several other BJP workers, too, had been attacked by militants following which the party had been demanding security for the cadre, reported The Tribune.
