Quite a few girls get enticed by the drugs but whoever lands in the mess loses almost everything till a rescue and rehabilitation is initiated. Babra Wani met one of the unfortunate victims and heard her long tragic story. It is the first-person account of the girl who literally landed in hell and somehow was brought back
“All my childhood I dreamt of growing old, old enough to make my own decisions and carve my own paths. I always wanted to shine to enjoy living my life to the fullest. I was always a happy-go-lucky girl, outgoing, friendly and an extrovert, so enjoying my life never felt tough.
My parents too are very trusting; they always gave me the kind of support and freedom that I wished for and still continue to do so. I was raised like a ‘Princess’. All of my wishes were fulfilled. For me, throughout my childhood nothing was imperfect, everything I wanted I had.
The Slip
Back in 2018, when I completed higher secondary school education and passed my class twelve, I was over the moon – full of hopes and dreams. I opted for the arts stream because science was never my thing. I got myself admitted to one of the most reputed colleges of Kashmir, I do not want to name it because I do not want people to know me, I just want them to know my story.
I got admission to a college about which I had heard a lot of fun things through my friends and cousins. I too thought maybe just like how it is shown in a Karan Johar movie; this college would be fun too. I thought college life was going to be smooth and full of roses. But I was wrong, what I experienced there was nothing short of a nightmare. I never knew my life after entering college would never be the same.
For the first day in college, I had been preparing for a week. I got myself a uniform stitched, bought a new bag, and all other accessories. I was just a teenager back then, very full of energy and full of excitement. I never, even in my dreams, thought that my excitement would take me to a place, which would become a living hell for me. A place which I thought would supposedly be the anchor to my ship actually sank it.
I remember wearing the new uniform which I had got stitched in a stylish way, with the best quality fibre, got a new hairstyle and a new hair colour too, blonde I remember, and went to the college all decked up. I expected to meet new people, make new friends and hang out with them. As expected I made new friends, hung out with them and made plenty of memories though little of them were pleasant while the rest were dark, the kind of memories I do not want to remember ever. But those memories still continue to haunt me, give me anxiety and send chills down my spine.
I am about to narrate my story, I have a request, please do not judge me.
The Beginning
Sometimes what we wish and expect is not fulfilled, our desires often lead us to the places we never want to be, and the same happened to me. I made new friends and we began doing everything together, from coming to college together to bunking the classes. All that time I forgot how cruel the world can be. I forgot the teachings of my parents, to be aware of strangers. I forgot the concept of ‘stranger danger’. All I remembered was just having fun.
My friends were all good and there was this one girl who was a year older and was way too extra friendly, especially with me. She once came to me and asked me if I was dating someone. Upon hearing my no, she said, “Oh fine let me introduce you to someone.”
I had limited worldly exposure; I did not know how to respond. He was her friend, a close one and in a matter of hours became closer to me too. He knew all the sweet words in the world; he knew the art of people-pleasing and we instantly became the best of friends. He always picked and dropped me. And I never doubted his intentions, we were clear, that we were just friends. And the way he always listened to me, and cared for me. I never ever thought that this boy who I call my friend was capable of doing any harm to me.
The Tablet
One day, while we were all sitting on the college ground on a bunk as usual, I was having a terrible headache because I had woken up early in the morning. I said “I want to go home, this headache is going to kill me,” and he instantly stood up and said, “Hey come on, let me drop you home.” That one ride threw me into a spiral of misery and suffering. It was that one ride, which I will never forget. My biggest regret for my whole life will be taking that ride.
I sat in his car and he started driving. I was crying with a headache. I asked him to stop near a medical shop to get medicine. But he told me that he had medicine for my headache and could cure my headache in seconds and he bought a water bottle too. And he passed both things to me and said, “Take this medicine, it will cure your headache,” I trusted his words, I wish I did not.
I took the tablet and in a matter of minutes, my head started spinning. I could not even comprehend what was happening to me. Even before I could think, I remember I fell into a state of dizziness. After reaching home I felt really sleepy and fell into a deep slumber. To date, I do not remember anything about that day after I took the medicine. However, I still remember I felt very low that day and days that followed. I wish I had not taken that medicine.
It all began there, with just that one tablet.
Unending Thirst
Soon, I started craving those medicines. So, some days later when I was with him again I asked him the name of the medicine. He said that the medicine is not easy to buy and only he can procure it. So, I asked him to get me one more. He got me two, and then three and with each passing day the number and the quantity only increased. And with each passing second, I became addicted to that tablet.
For me even surviving a moment without the tablet became difficult. I started calling and texting him frantically to get the medicine. After that, there was no coming back for me. I was ready to pay any price to procure the tablets, as I thought that it had become my lifeline and surviving without it seemed impossible. I became an addict.
Even after knowing that the medicine he used to give me was a sort of ‘drug’, I still could not fathom what hell I was falling into. He slowly introduced the heroin, tappaal and SP etc. I also started doing heroin.
The Price
Desires are never easy, especially when these come at a cost. I thought having money would help me and I would pay whatever amount I have to buy anything I want to. In the case of the tablets as well I was dead sure that it was just a matter of a few bucks. But I was wrong.
I used all my savings to buy the ‘medicines’. I used the ATMS cards of my mother and sister to withdraw hefty amounts to buy these drugs. I sold my mother’s jewels, used all of her money, and emptied her ATM cards just to support my drug needs.
Exploitation
But sometimes having money is not just enough; sometimes one has to pay the bigger price. And this happened to me… I had to pay a bigger price too. Sometimes I paid the price through my wallet and sometimes I paid it through my body.
I was sexually exploited, sometimes by him and other times by his friends. I was used and abused. He sold me so many times to so many different people that I do not even remember the count now. Sometimes he set me off with just one guy and other times with ten. If I have to calculate, I was sexually exploited by around 20 boys during that time. And this lasted from 2018 to 2019. All this time I suffered from sexual, verbal and physical abuse.
I was an addict, who just wanted to have that ‘medicine’, those tablets every day and I used to get them but after complying with his orders.
He used to hire make-up artists and salons to dress me up and make me presentable and then he sold me to different people on different occasions. He always said, “It is a give-and-take process, keep giving me what I want and I will give you what you need.” He started introducing me to different boys, asking me to “go with them.” Those boys used to give him money in exchange. I believe I became a commodity that could be sold and bought, and that too dirt cheap.
There, however, was not just sexual exploitation, I was subjected to emotional, physical and verbal abuse as well. I was beaten at times, and verbally abused almost every day. He used to beat me every time I said no. He used to hurl abuses at me, and call me names. He said such bad words that I still am not over it.
Mother Detects
With induced addiction, the aggression in me was so huge that my whole mental health began to suffer. I started throwing unnecessary tantrums at home. I used to sit all alone and avoid talking to my family. I even sometimes started consuming the tablets and doing heroin even at home as I enjoyed it. My mother grew suspicious but I shrugged off my shoulders. I did not want to get interrupted, I thought it was a joy and it was life. I was deeply mistaken.
When my family learnt about all of it, they became really angry, and now I realise they were right. I was stopped from going out and leaving home without the company of my mother. I was locked up in the four walls of my house. I did not expect that to happen, not back in that day, because I was flying high in the sky.
I knew they were highly disappointed but I did not care. I was totally out of my senses.
My maternal uncle, who works in the police department made sure to know everything about the guy and get him arrested. I am glad that my family still does not know that I fell prey to sexual exploitation, I know if they still come to know about it they will be devastated.
Migration
My parents made the tough decision to send me off, out of Kashmir, for a change. For one year at least my parents kept me away from my home. They got me a new mobile connection, and I made new friends. I began a new life. My parents started trusting me again. Since 2020, I began my new life, with new people and a new confidence. Since 2020 my treatment has stopped.
I started feeling really anxious, I developed anxiety issues, fear of people and trust issues, I started doubting every person’s intentions. My parents have suffered with me.
Through the whole process of undergoing treatment, my parents were absolutely with me.
While I still meet bad people in my life, I am grateful that the majority of people that I meet are good ones.
My message
Though I am not in a position to advise people yet speaking from my own personal experiences, do not trust anybody not at all. Young girls need to know that we have to trust our own instincts, our own sixth sense. And if you know that somebody is involved in any immoral activity, stay away from them, because it is you who suffers in the end, you, your family suffer, nobody else.
And if you think this is just my story… you are wrong.”

Dr Parray, who has been serving in this capacity since 2016 and hails from Tral, Pulwama in South Kashmir, completed his Masters and PhD from the University of Kashmir and Aligarh Muslim University, respectively. With a substantial body of work, including numerous journal articles, book chapters, essays, and reviews, as well as seven books to his name, he specialises in Islamic political thought, Islam and modernity, Islamic intellectual tradition, and Quranic studies.

The book, consisting of seven chapters, delves into democracy and democratisation in the Muslim world, democratic notions in Islam, and the discourse surrounding Islam and democracy from the mid-19th to the 21st century. Ultimately, it addresses the crucial question: Is Islam compatible with democracy?
Oxford University Press officially announced the book on September 13, 2023, and it is now available on the OUP website, Amazon, and other online platforms.
Dr. Tauseef’s achievement is significant, as he becomes one of the youngest academicians from Jammu and Kashmir to be published by Oxford University Press, a remarkable feat for a college professor. Colleagues have hailed this accomplishment as “a huge achievement at such a young age.”
The book has garnered endorsements and praise from internationally acclaimed scholars and specialists in Islamic Studies and Islamic political thought from various corners of the world, including the USA, Australia, Qatar, and Bosnia. Quoting party sources, KNO reported that the party has been trying to gain a foothold in the region and rope in many new and educated faces for the good of the party.
“The Union Territory leadership has been trying hard to evoke a response in Kargil as well and for the first time 4 of their candidates are continuing LAHDC polls. There were many faces and some didn’t come to the terms of the party forcing them not to give them a mandate and support,” sources said.
They said that four of the AAP candidates are contesting for the first time in Kargil. “There are a total of 30 seats in the council of which 26 are elected and 4 are announced by the administration.”

SRINAGAR: National Conference Vice-President and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated on Thursday that every political party and citizen desires elections in J&K. The sole dissenter in this regard, he noted, is the Lieutenant Governor who opposes the holding of Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
Omar responded to a query about the Ministry of Home Affairs’ decision to defer polls until after the expected Parliamentary elections in April-May 2024.
“National Conference is ready for the polls from day one. We have been advocating for elections, but we are aware that the BJP will not hold elections in J&K. They understand that the people, not just in Kashmir but also in the Jammu region, will respond resoundingly if elections are conducted,” Omar Abdullah stated, as per KNS, during his conversation with reporters in Srinagar.
He remarked that the Central Government is not inclined to hold Urban Local Body (ULB), Panchayat, or Assembly elections in J&K. “Conducting Parliamentary polls in 2024 is their compulsion, as they know the people will teach them a lesson through their votes,” he added.
Regarding the opposition meeting convened by NC President Dr Farooq Abdullah in Jammu, Omar mentioned that it is constructive to mutually discuss the current political situation. “Opposition leaders will convene and deliberate on the prevailing uncertain political situation in J&K,” he said.
In response to a query, the former CM expressed that there should be no objection to J&K becoming a terror-free region if DGP Dilbagh Singh is asserting their commitment to achieving this goal. He added, “Our party has lost thousands of leaders and workers during the turmoil. If the DGP is dedicated to playing his role, we will also play our part. Let him work towards making J&K a terror-free place.”
However, he pointed out that the Kokernag encounter revealed the gap between claims of peace being established in J&K and the actual situation. “Our efforts should go beyond statements, as we know that the Kokernag encounter exposed the tall claims of peace in J&K,” he added.
The former Chief Minister of J&K advocated for the revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), stating, “Let them make Jammu and Kashmir a terror-free place, and then revoke AFSPA, which has been in place for decades.”
He emphasised that every individual in J&K desires elections and an elected government, but the only opposition comes from Lieutenant Governor J&K Manoj Sinha. (KNS)

Humanity owes an eternal debt of gratitude to Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) for the immense knowledge, guidance and hope he left for all people and for all times to come.
Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) was sent as a mercy to all humanity and is an excellent example for those who hope to earn Allah’s pleasure. He demonstrated utmost mercy, justice, and excellent character throughout his life.
The Prophet was exceptionally merciful and compassionate. His mercy encompassed even his staunchest enemies. When the people of Taif mistreated him, he prayed for their guidance rather than destruction. When Makkah was conquered, he pardoned his enemies even after years of persecution. His mercy extended to animals, children, women, and slaves. He kissed and stroked children’s heads and stood up for the rights of slaves and servants. He never sought revenge unless justice absolutely required it.
The Prophet’s sense of justice was unmatched. He did not discriminate between rich and poor, strong and weak, Muslim and non-Muslim. When a woman of noble lineage stole, he insisted she face the prescribed legal punishment. He established rights for servants and slaves and harshly reprimanded those who insulted them. He distributed war booty equitably and refused to grant requests that violated justice. Even regarding his wives, he was meticulously just in treatment and visitation.
Allah praised the Prophet for his excellent character. He was known for his honesty and trustworthiness before his prophethood. He displayed extraordinary courage in conveying the message, fearing none but Allah. His worship was consistently dutiful. He disliked overburdening his followers. His generosity was peerless; he gave continuously in knowledge, time, advice and material possessions right up until his death when he left nothing behind.
Under His Banner
Full obedience to the Prophet’s teachings is a requirement of faith. Love entails following his example, heeding his warnings against innovation, and avoiding excess. Supporting him means defending his person, household and companions against criticism. Those who contradict his teachings cannot truly claim to love him.
The Prophet’s biography provides encounters with his excellent example and guidance. In Madinah, he built a state based on justice and mutual rights. During the Hudaybiyyah treaty, he demonstrated that keeping one’s word is paramount. His humility, worship, and character stand as timeless guidance for those seeking closeness to Allah. Contemplating such encounters helps Muslims uphold his Sunnah long after his earthly life.
The Prophet’s rights over us are immense. Belief in and wholehearted obedience to him is obligatory. His example contains the answers to every problem and solution to every ill. The greatest honour lies in adherence to his divinely revealed methodology and imitation of his perfect morals.
The Mission
In every age, Allah sent prophets and messengers to guide humanity towards truth and righteousness. However, some prophets hold a uniquely special place due to the enormity of their mission and the far-reaching impact they have on the world. Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) is undoubtedly one of these exceptional prophets whose guidance fundamentally transformed Arabia and the world forever.
The Prophet was born in 570 CE in Mecca, in present-day Saudi Arabia. Mecca was a trading hub where different tribes converged, and idol worship was rampant. Female infanticide was tragically common, and tribal feuds and alcoholism were widespread. The Arabs were mostly unlettered people who were unaware of any organised religion or civilisation.
It was in this gloom that the light of Muhammad (Peace be upon him) shone forth, presaging the beginning of a new era of spiritual and societal renaissance. The revelations he received over 23 years taught the oneness of Allah, who is without parents, partners or progeny. They emphasised sublime morals and upright character as the basis of faith. He instilled courage and integrity in the weakest members of society and established a brotherhood that rose above tribal allegiances. His teachings promoted intellectual inquiry, urging people to reflect on nature and their own existence.
Within a short period, Arabia underwent a drastic transformation as it willingly embraced these benevolent teachings. Tribal feuds diminished, female infanticide was abolished, and people refrained from alcohol consumption. For the first time in centuries, Arabia pulsated with the enthusiasm of monotheistic belief and was unified under a common identity. This monumental spiritual and moral revival soon overflowed to neighbouring lands as Muslims carried the message of truth, justice and beauty to different corners of the world.
Now, almost two billion Muslims across the globe continue to draw inspiration from the character of the Prophet and apply his teachings in their daily lives. A glimpse into Islamic civilisation’s crowning achievements in diverse fields like philosophy, arts, architecture, literature and mysticism reveals the wide-ranging influence of the message of the Prophet.
However, the blessings of the light of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) are not restricted to Muslims alone. His compassion and moral excellence left an indelible mark on all of humanity in multiple ways:
Human Dignity and Equality
Pre-Islamic Arabia was characterised by rampant class divisions, racism and tribal pride. Slaves and the poor were socially ostracised and denied their rights. Women were viewed as inferior creatures who lacked intelligence. Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) courageously stood up against these injustices that plagued society.
He declared that all humans are equal before Allah, with the only distinction being personal character and piety (taqwa). He welcomed slaves, the poor and women into the fold of Islam and accorded them their long-denied rights to live with dignity. Bilal, who was an African slave, was appointed as the first muezzin of Islam. Under the leadership of the Prophet, social status came to be determined by taqwa and moral excellence rather than class, colour or gender. This revolutionary message of human equality and unity dealt a blow to racism, class divisions and gender discrimination that persist globally even today.
Empowering Women
Pre-Islamic Arabia treated women as mere possessions with no rights or status. Female infanticide was rampant, and women were barred from inheriting property. Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) actively converted this reprehensible attitude towards women. Islam prohibited infanticide and beseeched his followers to raise their daughters with love and compassion.
Under his guidance, women were allowed to inherit, own property, conduct business, learn and teach others. The Islamic tradition is rich with stories of highly accomplished Muslim women who were scholars, mystics, leaders in their community and even fought in battles. By empowering women and reinstating their status in society, the Prophet pioneered a movement of female emancipation which even some modern societies lack.
Justice, Charity and Good Morals
In the era of ignorance, a few powerful chieftains dominated the impoverished masses. The weak and poor were deprived of their rights. Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) taught that a society’s greatness is determined by how it treats its weakest members. He instituted compulsory charity so that wealth could circulate among all classes. He also encouraged freeing slaves, feeding the hungry, caring for orphans and animals and countless other acts of benevolence.
The Prophet dealt justly and kindly even with his staunchest enemies. He bore patiently the most vicious attacks on his name, character and message. His sincere efforts to guide others stemmed from selfless compassion, not a desire for power, prestige or revenge. This unwavering commitment to justice and forgiveness in the face of animosity is an inspiring example for all.
Cultivating Taqwa and Spirituality
The Arabian society was steeped in materialism and marked by wanton licentiousness. The Prophet awakened people to higher concerns beyond mundane survival and physical gratification. He taught that this world is ephemeral while the afterlife is eternal.
The revelations from Allah urged people to reflect, be grateful to Allah for His blessings, remember Him often, supplicate Him and strive to attain His good pleasure. Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) instilled taqwa in all aspects of a Muslim’s life by teaching that each lawful worldly affair, even eating and sleeping, can also become spiritually elevated through purity of intention. The ethical paradigm of balancing worldly pursuits with faith, self-discipline and concern for the afterlife provides a healthy template for holistic spiritual growth.
Universal Religious Brotherhood
For the first time in Arabia, Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) united the people under the umbrella of religion. His teachings transcended race, colour, class and even creed.
When the Prophet entered Madinah, his arrival marked the inception of the Constitution of Madinah. This historic covenant between Muslims, Jews and other non-Muslim residents opened the door for people of various faiths to live cooperatively as allies.
Renowned non-Muslim intellectuals and mystics like Bahira, Mobeed and Nestorius held the Prophet in high regard and recognised his Prophethood. The Prophet’s legacy of leading with compassion and fostering interfaith ties offers much-needed guidance in our era plagued by religious divides.
Spreading Education and Rational Thinking
In pre-Islamic Arabia, very few people could read or write. The very first verse ordered the Prophet to read. Islam placed immense emphasis on seeking knowledge, reflection and discovering the universal laws of Allah in nature.
Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) encouraged literacy among both genders. Mosques doubled as educational centres where people instructed each other in spiritual and worldly subjects. This led to an awakening in Arabia, especially among women, who enthusiastically learn and teach others. Within a few decades, Arabia outpaced other nations by producing scholars, jurists, physicians and mystics who made lasting contributions to human civilisation.
The Islamic civilisation blossomed into an intellectual powerhouse where scholars subscribing to all religions gathered and freely exchanged ideas. The spirit of rationality and scientific temper introduced by Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) influenced great Muslim polymaths like Ibn Sina, Al-Khwarizmi and Ibn Khaldun whose pioneering work hugely impacted the Western Renaissance.
Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) taught that a society’s well-being depends on each citizen fulfilling their obligations sincerely. He urged mutual advising and forbidding evil: every citizen must constructively criticise wrongdoings within one’s capacity. He said that the parable of believers is like one body – when one part hurts, the entire body is in pain. This underscores the civic responsibility each person owes to society.
Laying The Foundational Pillars for Civilisation
From the nomadic desert life, Arabia underwent a meteoric rise after Islam to become an intellectual superpower within decades. The Prophet seeded the foundational systems and values which catalysed this ascendancy.
Islam champions education, innovation, entrepreneurship, science, art, culture and dignity of labour. The Prophet institutionalised the Zakat (charity) system, which circulated wealth, alleviated poverty and tugged at people’s innate empathy to care for disadvantaged members of society. He built a model city-state in Madinah whose governance policy has inspired Muslim and non-Muslim states throughout history.
These pivotal measures created a fertile ground for an enlightened civilisation to flourish. Muslim civilisation excelled in fields as diverse as astronomy, mathematics, optics, philosophy, industry and architecture. Their universities attracted students from around the world. Leaders like Al-Ma’mun and Harun al-Rashid invested heavily in higher learning and research. Coffee houses stimulated intellectual discourse while hospitals provided healthcare.
Mercy for All Creation
Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) taught unconditional compassion towards all creation as a foremost duty of a Muslim. He prohibited abuse towards livestock and beasts of burden. He established rights for animals centuries before animal rights were talked about. He forbade cutting trees or killing animals except for food long before there was any hint of global warming in the air. His empathy for creation was all-encompassing.
The Prophet said: I was sent as a mercy to the entire creation. This mercy transcended boundaries of race, geography or even faith. Muslim armies were ordered to treat prisoners of war humanely and feed them the same meals that Muslims ate. This egalitarian principle won many non-Muslims’ hearts and facilitated Islam’s spread.
The Prophet’s mercy extended indiscriminately to young and old, free and enslaved, humans and animals. Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha described his moral grandeur uniquely when she said: “The morality of the Prophet was the Quran” – meaning his life was the human embodiment of the Divine Message.
A Guidance for Every Era
Fourteen centuries have passed since the Prophet walked the earth. Generations and dynasties have come and gone. Yet, the Prophet’s teachings and magnanimous character continue to inspire billions across the globe to lead ethical lives and contribute meaningfully to society. The Prophet’s legacy has also left an indelible mark on those who sincerely study his life and teachings.
One of the greatest miracles of the Prophet is the everlasting wisdom found in his sayings and example. He guided life in its totality – worship, theology, morality, economics, politics, social issues, family life and everything in between. His teachings possess an astonishing applicability relevant for all times. Even today’s complex challenges like racism, climate change, political corruption, economic disparity, violent radicalization and social breakdown can begin to heal by sincerely applying Prophetic wisdom.
To Perfect the Morals
In the Prophet’s life, we find the tenderness of an innocent child, the empathy of a loving mother and the fierce justice of a wise leader all beautifully rolled into one complex tapestry reflecting different hues of human perfection. He rose to become the man he himself described: “I was sent to perfect noble morals.”
Indeed, the most lasting legacy of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) is the supreme ideal he embodied of moral and spiritual perfection attained through sincere submission to Allah.
When we open our hearts to the blessings and light of the Prophet, we reaffirm our collective yearning for peace and our refusal to be divided. We revive hope for a more just, peaceful and inclusive world. At a time when ignorance, greed and intolerance threaten us all, we must allow the Prophet’s example to inspire us globally towards greater compassion and humanity.
The road ahead is long and fraught with uncertainty. But if we walk it together with sincerity, patience and wisdom, we can illuminate even the darkest of corners of time with the eternal light of truth, humanity and justice.
Humanity owes an eternal debt of gratitude to Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) for the immense knowledge, guidance and hope he left for all people and for all times to come. By following in the footsteps of the Prophet, humankind will continue to move forward into a brighter era of peace, unity and enlightenment.

SRINAGAR: The Private Schools Association of Jammu and Kashmir (PSAJK) raised apprehensions regarding the reported relocation of all National Testing Agency (NTA) examination centers from Kashmir, suspecting a hidden agenda aimed at generating a crisis during the 2024 exams.
In a statement issued by PSAJK, the association expressed dismay at the mysterious move by NTA to transfer all examination centers out of Kashmir, viewing it as a worrisome development for the prospects of Kashmiri students.
The spokesperson of PSAJK while recalling the significant crisis faced when Kashmiri students were assigned examination centers outside of Jammu and Kashmir for their CUET exams. “This forced many underprivileged students to abstain from participating in these exams, leading to a severe predicament. After appeals from members of civil society, political leaders, and other representatives the government established examination centers within Kashmir, tus avoiding a full blown crisis.”
The Association said that it was expected government would establish permanent centres in Kashmir after the CUET incident, however, on the contrary, even temporary centres are being taken away creating uneasiness among students and their parents.
The spokesperson said that if there are no permanent exam centres in Kashmir by next year, NTA may claim once again that they have no centers in Kashmir. “If any crisis is created next year, these officials will be fully responsible,” he said.
PSAJK called upon Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to take cognizance of the situation and prevent the relocation of NTA centers from Kashmir. “The LG is urged to issue directives for the establishment of permanent examination centers in Kashmir to spare students from further distress.”
A permanent solution to this issue is urgently needed, as nobody wishes to contend for their rights on an annual basis. The students of Kashmir have every right to participate in exams within their own region, emphasized a PSAJK representative.

It is a mixed bag of surprises and challenges when it comes to inheritance in the case of women in Kashmir.Syed Shadab Ali Gillanimet a number of women to understand how the institution of inheritance works at the grassroots
Shameema, 42, has chosen not to claim her share in her father’s property for the past 42 years. She believes that maintaining a good relationship with her brothers is more important. “I have to keep my relationship with my brothers alive and happy, and that is all that matters,” She said, insisting that this decision was not altered even by the continued insistence of her brothers’ attempts that she take her share.
This is a trend in Kashmir. A vast section of the women after settling in their lives avoid staking any claim over the inheritance. They are willing to forgo their rightful share for a harmonious relationship with their brothers.
Exceptions do exist. Sayida passed away around seven years ago. Her husband and their children are seeking a share in the ancestral house, a piece of land and whatever the dead lady’s father left behind.
“The husband and the sons both visited the house, claiming their rights to occupy it,” advocate Omaira Farooq, who is handling the case, in the District Court Srinagar, said. “This became the basis of contention between the two parties.”
In yet another case handled by a different advocate, a dispute has dragged on for over sixty years with no signs of progress. “A sister filed a lawsuit against her brothers seeking her share, but no progress has been made thus far. None of the parties is willing to compromise, although the property in question is merely a three-roomed house,” the advocate reveals.
Mutual Settlements
While many disputes follow a legal course, there are instances where parties reach out-of-court settlements.
In 2015, Sara sent a message to her younger brother, a doctor, requesting a bedroom with an attached bathroom as her share in his property. The brother, taken aback, struggled to comprehend the demand. “I had already offered her a piece of land, which she accepted. Now she wants a share in my house as well,” expressed the devastated brother. “I have four children to provide for. How can I meet their needs and fulfil my sister’s demand?”
In an attempt to resolve the matter outside the court, the brother eventually paid an amount of Rs 20 lakh to his sister, hoping it would satisfy her and prevent further demands.
Denied Inheritance
Instances, where women are wrongfully denied their inheritance, are not uncommon. In the case of Mahmooda, 78, her brother deceitfully obtained her thumb impression. It was through a distant relative that she discovered her brother’s betrayal, leaving her utterly shocked.
“One of my distant cousins approached me and asked Tche chutthe hisse trovmut? (Have you given up your share?),” recounted Mahmooda. Initially, she didn’t understand the meaning behind the question. However, when she later shared the incident with her husband, he embarked on a quest to uncover the truth.
Mahmooda continued, tears welling up as she wiped them away, “When my husband returned, he revealed that I had unwittingly thumb-stamped the property documents. I had placed so much trust in my brother; I never anticipated he would betray me in such a manner.” Since then, Mahmooda has not spoken to her brother. “It is not about the property; it is about the deceit. I cannot forget it until my last breath.”
Similar cases of deceit and betrayal abound. Mohammad Rafiq from South Kashmir shared his mother’s account of a case in which a brother went to court and falsely claimed his sister’s death while she was still alive, all to deprive her of her rightful share. “I have heard of many such cases of this nature,” Rafiq added. “In one incident, a brother even asked his cousin to impersonate his sister in court and sign documents relinquishing her property share.”
Legal Perspective
Advocate Irshad Ahmad Masoom, who practices at the High Court Srinagar, recounted several cases he has handled during his career. In one instance, he discussed a woman who steadfastly refused to sell her share of her late husband’s property, despite continuous pressure from her daughters. The mother remained resolute. “Her argument was simple – I will not sell my share. It is my sole source of independence and security. My late husband left it for me. Why would I sell it? My daughters can sell it after my death,” said Irshad.
The woman, having lost her husband and with all her five daughters married, found herself living alone. She did not want to dispose off her share and rely on her daughter and son-in-law for her livelihood. There were no options.
In another case, Sara willingly gave up her share in the property for the family of her deceased brother. “I have two brothers, and I am the only sister,” a confident and loving 59-year-old Sara explained. “When my younger brother passed away, leaving behind his widow and three children, my elder brother asked me to claim my share of the property. Without hesitation, I informed him that I would give my share to my younger brother’s family. Almost immediately I signed the necessary documents to ensure they wouldn’t suffer.”
Numerous individuals like Sara selflessly relinquish their share and property for the welfare of their brothers.
For Saima, a 36-year-old woman, one phone call from her brother brought about a significant change in her life. “When my brother called and informed me that they were planning to sell their house and give me my share, I rushed to them immediately to prevent the sale,” Saima said. “I knew my marriage was not going to work, so I intervened. A year later, I got divorced and began living with them.”
Usually, this is the main reason why women are willingly giving up their rights. They fear that in case they face any crisis in conjugal life, they should have the doors of her brothers open.
In one case, five brothers had one sister. They decided to give her an orchard, which she started to take care of. Within days, she felt a change in the attitude of her sister-in-law, which irked her. Instead of seeking their inheritance from their parents, her sisters-in-law started talking about their relatives accepting her share. Fearing the deterioration of her relations, she stopped cultivating it. Even though the brothers were supportive and did not touch for three years, they eventually had to intervene and take it over.
The Personal Law
While explaining the provisions of the Muslim Personal Law regarding inheritance, she emphasised that the law clearly states that a daughter is entitled to a share of her father’s property, which may vary in size but is allocated. “In the Muslim Personal Law, another person cannot claim their share until the property owner is alive,” Advocate Omaira Farooq said. She mentioned that property disputes can sometimes endure for more than half a century.
Asserting that inheritance takes effect upon the death of the property owner, the lawyer said: “The property is divided equally among the sons, while the daughter receives one-third of the property. The distribution of shares varies in different circumstances, such as for a mother, a wife, and so on.”
Regarding specific scenarios, Omaira explained, “A daughter will inherit a one-third share of her father’s property, while a mother whose son has passed away will inherit one-fourth share from her son’s property. In the case of a woman who has lost her husband, she will receive a one-eighth share from her husband’s property.”
She also discussed the law of reversion, which applies when a man has no son. However, she noted that in the case of a mother’s property, a daughter is entitled to an equal share.
Islamic Perspective
According to Islamic scriptures, if a daughter inherits – whether from her mother or her father – her share of the inheritance may vary according to the situation:
If the daughter is an only child, i.e., she has no brothers or sisters (i.e., heirs who are descendants), then she has half of the legacy of the deceased. If there is more than one daughter – two or more – and the deceased has no male children, then their share is two-thirds. These are principles laid by the Quran.
If other male heirs are descendants of the deceased (one or more), then they are to be given the remainder after each person who is entitled to a share has been given that share. Her share is equal to one-half of her brother’s share, whether they are two or whether the children include both males and females. The male takes a share equal to that of two females.
Denying The Rights
These are the shares which have been decreed by Allah. So, it is not permissible for anyone to change any part of them, or to deprive an heir, or to bring in anyone who is not an heir, or to deprive an heir of any part of his inheritance or to give him more than the share allotted to him by Shari`ah.
Islamic scholar Muhammad Abdullah Nadvi highlights that the Qur’an mentions a woman’s entitlement to her share in the property, whether she is a daughter, sister, mother, or wife. “If the men in the family deny her this right or prevent her from claiming it, they are considered oppressors, as they are depriving the woman of her rightful share bestowed upon her by the religion,” Nadvi affirms.
In Islam, it is not permissible for anyone to deprive a woman of her inheritance or to use tricks to do so because Allah, may He be glorified, has allocated a share of inheritance to her in His holy Book and in the Sunnah of His Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). And the Muslim scholars unanimously agreed on that.
(All names of the women, excepting the lawyers, have been changed to protect their identity.)

SRINAGAR: Ali Muhammad Sagar, General Secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, expressed concern on Monday about the absence of an elected government for five years, leading to an escalation in public grievances and a lack of accountability in administration.
He made these remarks while addressing a meeting of party leaders and officials at the party headquarters today.
The meeting involved detailed discussions on the current political situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the challenges faced by the people, and organisational matters.
“In the absence of democracy, solving the people’s problems becomes impossible. The bureaucratic system cannot replace a government elected by the people under any circumstances,” Sagar said. “Only a popular government resulting from a fair and transparent election can truly alleviate the people’s concerns.”
Furthermore, he lamented that Jammu and Kashmir has been left to the discretion of a select few for the past five years, depriving the people of democracy.
He emphasised that elections are the cornerstone of democracy, and the progress and prosperity of countries depend on democracy. However, he expressed disappointment that the central BJP government is reluctant to hold elections in Jammu and Kashmir while elections proceed on schedule in other states across the country. He questioned, “Why this discrimination against Jammu and Kashmir?”
Sagar highlighted that the undemocratic system has left the people of Jammu and Kashmir in a state of despair, with frustrated and disillusioned youth, high unemployment, and a deficit in development. He noted that decisions and actions are made without public scrutiny, and common people’s voices go unheard.
He acknowledged the sacrifices made for the establishment of democratic, administrative, constitutional, and legal institutions in Jammu and Kashmir, expressing concern that the current central government is dismantling these achievements.
Sagar attributed the establishment of democracy and democratic institutions in Jammu and Kashmir, including Panchayat Raj, Kisan Raj, and Mazdoor Raj, to the historical and revolutionary initiatives of the J&K National Conference. He noted that the creation of local bodies and cooperative institutions in cities and villages was also a gift from the JKNC. These initiatives granted the people of Jammu and Kashmir the right to vote, freedom of the press, access to justice through the judiciary, land ownership rights for 80 percent of the rural population, free education, and free medical treatment. He stated that the National Conference’s revolutionary actions are recorded in history, and the party has a promising future.
Senior leaders, including Shamima Firdous, Muhammad Sayed Akhoon, Ahsan Pardesi, Peer Afaq Ahmed, Er. Sabia Qadri, Jagdish Singh, Azad, Dr. Muhammad Saeed Makhdumi, Qaiser Jalali, and other officials, also attended the meeting.
