Recognizing the unique talent of shooter Chain Singh who made the state proud by winning 6 gold medals in 2016 South Asian Games besides clinching medal in 2014 Asian Games, J&K government has sanctioned Rs 5 lakh cash award for the young sportsperson.
Interestingly, the announcement came a day after J&K Bank included and awarded him as part of its 12 faces which are featured on its wall calendar.
“Chain Singh, a native of Jammu & Kashmir who is serving in the Indian Army, shall be presented this prestigious award by the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who is also the President of the State Sports Council,” informed Waheed-ur-Rehman Para, Secretary State Sports Council.
The cash award for the son of the soil has been sanctioned on the recommendation of Sports Minister, Imran Reza Ansari.
Pertinently, sports activities in the State have got a fillip in the past few months due to the endeavors of the present dispensation which besides upgrading the sports infrastructure is also focusing on felicitating the accomplished sportspersons to encourage them.
In this regard, eight year old Tajamul, gold medal winner in International Kickboxing and Meenal Gupta, gold medal winner in Junior International Chess meet in Sri Lanka were honoured with cash awards by the Chief Minister recently.

“What do you do when your remote village lacks proper roads? According to Chain Singh, you shoot for the stars. In 2016, this member of the Army Marksmanship Unit became the first athlete from J&K to represent India at Olympics when he participated in shooting events in Rio.
Singh, who hails from a pastoral village in Doda District won 6 gold medals – three in individual events and three in team events – at the 2016 South Asian Games in India. He was also a bronze medalist at the 2014 Asian Games in South Korea.”
