Legislators from opposition and ruling party Monday warned government of possible unrest in Kashmir again if the ‘fragile calm is not addressed properly.
While speaking during discussion to the grants of Home and other departments, headed by chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, legislators warned the situation in Kashmir needs to be addressed and the calm should not be taken for granted.
NC lawmaker Mubarak Gul said, “The problem needs to be addressed immediately or the situation will turn perhaps more ugly.”
“Situation looks like there will be an explosion and we all will be invisible then,” Gul said while lashing at government and said PDP’s healing touch has turned into ‘hitting touch’, while referring to the 2016 unrest that consumed about hundred lives and left thousands maimed.
Young MLA of the ruling PDP, Yawar Mir said that there has been some ‘mistakes’ on the part of government in dealing with the protests.
“The issue in Kashmir is not about employment,” he said, “Had it been so then stones would not have been picked up by 12-year-old, 14-year-old children.”
Legislators also alleged that there has been highhandedness by the government forces and wrong people were booked under draconian Public safety Act.
MLA Pahalgam, Altaf Kaloo alleged three persons were booked under PSA due to “personal rivalry of SHO.”
While as PDP’s MLA Kokernag Ab Raheem Rather, also warned that, working of forces needs to be modified.
He also alleged that a Lashkar militant from his area was “compelled to rejoin militancy by forces.”
“Basheer Lashkar was harassed by forces regularly that compelled him to join militancy,” said MLA Kokernag.
Basheer Lashkar is divisional commander of militant outfit Lashkar-i-toiba.
Rather also alleged that, wrong people were booked under PSA and said the ones who were actual organisers were set free.
CPI(m) leader and MLA Kulgam, MY Tarigami urged for sustainable dialogue and said, “Peace cannot be brought back by the barrel of the gun.”
MLA Udampur, Pawan Gupta also warned that situation could be worse than 2016 in the coming times.
“There are not good reports from Kashmir and unrest can be next year as well,” Gupta said, “there were reports last year also but government ignored.”
He was seconded by Congress lawmaker from Bandipora, Usmaan Majeed .
While as Senior National Conference leader, Mohammad Ali Sagar moved a step further suggesting government to go for a dialogue with the local militants while terming the situation ‘fragile’ in Kashmir.
