As authorities sealed summer capital heart – Lal Chowk – early Wednesday thus disallowing funeral prayers in absentia for Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) co-founder, Amanullah Khan, chaos prevails in Srinagar.

The traffic coming from South Srinagar has been diverted through two roads in view of the on-going construction of Jahangir Chowk-Rambagh flyover while police have sealed roads leading to Ghanta Ghar.

JKLF chief, Muhammad Yasin Malik, had called for funeral prayers of Amanullah Khan. Khan died on Tuesday in Rawalpindi in Pakistan. He was not keeping well for some time.

Malik was arrested early today as concertina wires were put around Lal Chowk scuttling movement of traffic and pedestrians.

Passengers coming from Hyderpora and Chanapora areas said that they faced massive traffic Jam on Rambagh.

“Traffic has been diverted to Bypass from Rambagh Bund while vehicles leaving city have been asked to take Gogh Ji Bagh route behind Amar Singh College,” traffic police officials said.

The traffic police department issued the advisory in view of the Kolkata flyover collapse. Construction was still going on when the flyover collapsed in Kolkata early this month killings dozens.

“We have taken precautionary measures to avoid any mishap,” an official said, “as over-head construction is going on the Jahangir Chowk-Rambagh flyover so it is imperative for us not allow the movement of vehicles or pedestrians on the route.

However, the diversion of traffic from Bypass side and Gogh Ji Bagh areas has added to the mess. “There are long queues of vehicles,” a passenger said, “it took me 90 minutes to reach Lal Chowk from Pirbagh otherwise a twenty minute drive.”
