The Government on Friday foiled the proposed post-Friday protest demonstration of Hurriyat (g) by detaining its activists and workers in the Hyderpora office.

Pir Saifullah, the personal secretary of Syed Ali Geelani told Kashmir Life over phone that at around noon today a contingent of police arrived at the office cum residence of the octogenarian Hurriyat (g) chairperson Syed Ali Geelani and didn’t let the people who were already inside come out of the office.

“We were not allowed to come out of the office and neither were the office bearers who were to reach the office allowed to enter the premises,” he said.

However, he said at around 1:30 pm he along with Muhammad Yusuf Mujahid, Abdul Hameed Magray and others moved out of the office to offer congregational prayers and were stopped by the police. “We were dragged into vehicles and detained in police station Humhama,” he said.

Meanwhile, reports of post-Friday protests were reported from Sopore, Handwara and Kashmir University.

In Sopore witnesses said that Soon after Friday prayers Hurriyat (g) activists marched from Jamia Masjid Sopore towards main chowk. “The march was attended by scores of locals who shouted pro-freedom slogans,” they said.

In Handwara, witnesses said that youth, post-Friday prayers, shouted slogans in favor of “Azadi”. They demanded that the culprits of the recent five killings be handed over severest punishment.

The call for protests was given by Hurriyat (g) chairperson Syed Ali Geelani against the recent civilian killings in Handwara and for not allowing the funeral prayers in absentia of late Amanullah Khan.
