Mirwaiz led Hurriyat to raise issue of Afsar Khan with SHRC

Expressing serious concern over the continuous human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq led Hurriyat conference Wednesday said that state institutions were ‘directly responsible’ for acts of rights violations.


A statement issued stated that various agencies including forces and intelligence agencies have indulged in a rat race in Kashmir to “reap benefits” and further their own ‘vested interests’ in the Kashmir conflict.


Referring to Mohammad Afsar Khan of Baramulla, the statement said that for personal promotion and benefits, a captain rank Indian army officer coerced Khan to become an army spy. “The Indian army official subjected Khan to third degree torture and put hot iron over his private parts just to force him to become their spy which he was refusing.”


The statement said that the APHC (M) Human Rights department has sent a team to Baramulla to collect more facts about the incident. “Hurriyat is also mulling to take up the matter with the SHRC,” it added.


The statement further stated that the amalgam has taken up a dozen cases of rights violations with the Amnesty international and SHRC. “Children and women were the worst victim of military sponsored torture in Kashmir,” the statement read adding, “Hurriyat would soon issue a detailed report regarding rights violations in Kashmir.”
