State Cabinet which met here as the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on chair, Thursday sanctioned a Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the civilian killings of 2010 agitation, official sources said.
They added that a fresh COI has been sanctioned to conduct a time bound probe into the civilian killings which happened from January to December 2010.
128 people mostly young students were killed in the 2010 uprising.
Worth to mention that the government had already ordered a commission of inquiry into the killing of 17 people but the commission for many reasons could not complete its inquiry.
There has been a strong demand from many quarters to probe the killings of 2010 but the demand was not paid any heed.
After the debacle in recently held LS polls, the ruling National Conference is on a path of ‘damage control’.
The party is on the path of ‘introspection’ in order to find out the reasons of its debacle at the hands of the PDP in the valley.
“It was unanimously decided to order a fresh COI into the killings of 2010 and today it was sanctioned in the cabinet,” a National Conference leader said.
The separatists on the other have been demanding an ‘impartial’ probe into the killings of 2010.
“How can the inquiry of the same government be impartial which is directly involved in the killings of innocent people,” Nayeem Ahmad Khan, a Hurriyat (JK) leader said.
