Police have arrested at least 15 persons including a cleric in connection with the attack on cop with axe in Pattan area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Pertinently, unidentified persons Saturday attacked a police man with an axe in Pattan market and decamped with his INSAS service rifle. The cop Firdous Ahmad Baba (683IRP) of 16th Battalion was shifted to SKIMS in critical condition.

Police sources told CNS that at least 15 persons have been arrested in this connection so far while a student and an Imam was released after sustained interrogation. Some of the arrested youth hail from Central Kashmir’s Budgam district. Sources added that police launched a massive search operation in Pattan area after it used public address system to declare crack down in the area. “Massive search operation was launched. We even search nearby orchards but could not trace the INSAS rifle,” a police official said.

SSP Baramulla Mir Suhail said that few persons including an Imam and students were called to police station for questioning and they were all released after they got their statements recorded.

In a similar attack, militants had barged into the house of a judge in the city’s Qamarwari area on Thursday morning around 2 am and disarmed the guard on duty. They later fled from the spot along with the service rifle, two magazines and 60 rounds.

In another attack gunmen fired at a hospital security guard when he was buying medicine from a shop near Karan Nagar Srinagar.

On July 26 last month, a cop was killed at a market in south Kashmir’s Bijbehara area. Another cop was killed in a grenade attack on the intervening night of 26-27 in north Kashmir’s Sopore area.

Meanwhile police have issued a fresh directive asking cops to patrol in buddy pairs at busy markets and remain alert.
