One more militant killed in Kupwara, death toll reaches 8 in 3 days

One more militant was killed on Tuesday in the Kalaroos encounter taking the overall death toll to eight, including five militants and three Army soldiers, police sources said.


A gunbattle erupted in forest area of Lolab, adjacent to Kalaroos, in Kupwara district after army launched an operation to track down a group of militants who had managed to escape during the encounter, sources said.


They said the militants were engaged by security forces leading to a fierce gunbattle that was going on.


Lance Naik Dhananjay Kumar was injured in the exchange of firing, they said adding the soldier later succumbed to injuries.


This was is the third fatality suffered by army in Kupwara district in the past two days.


An army man was killed in a gunbattle with militants in Kalaroos area of the district on Sunday while another was killed in Keran sector a night earlier.


Four militants were also killed in the Kalaroos operation.
