SRINAGAR

Protests erupted in South Kashmir’s Pulwama town on Thursday after police arrested the father in place of his son who according to police is a ‘wanted stone-pelter’.

Sources told CNS that during the nocturnal raid in Prichoo area of Pulwama town, police took Muhammad Ayoub Nengroo into custody after they found his son Shahid Ahmed missing from the house.

Scores of people staged a protest against the arrest of father in place of his son and blocked the traffic on Srinagar-Pulwama road for all but two hours. Protestors were demanding the release of Muhammad Ayoub. Top police officials assured protestors that Muhammad Ayoub would be released once his son surrenders before the police.

Reports said that some concerned citizens of the area persuaded Shahid Ahmed to surrender before the police after which his father was released from detention.

A police official said that Shahid Ahmed was evading arrest from past many days. “He is involved in many stone-pelting incidents. There are at least 250 stone-pelters in the town who are still at large. Some 30 stone-pelters were bailed out by the Court from past many days,” he said.
