Police resorted to tear gas shelling and lathi charge after the family of 23-year-old youth Wahid Yaqoob Lawdari who was found dead at Kullu tourist resort in Himachal Pradesh on May 2 staged protest alleging that they have been receiving threatening letters from unknown quarters in which it is claimed that slain Wahid Yaqoob was running LeT group in Bangalore Karnataka.
Eyewitnesses told CNS that family members and neighbors of the slain youth took to streets at Firdous Abad Batamaloo and demanded probe into the death of Wahid Yaqoob Lawdari.
Due to protests, all the shops and business establishments got closed while police was deployed in strength to disperse the protestors.
The protestors mostly women alleged that police thrashed them without any provocation while it fired tear-smoke shells in their houses that created panic in the area. The brother of the slain youth namely Shahid Yaqoob Lawdari said, “we have been continuously receiving threatening letters in which we are directed not to pursue the case of Waheed Yaqoob. The letter claims that we are all militants and our mother supplies arms and ammunition to the militants,” he said.
Another relative of the slain youth said that they had shown all these threatening letters to police who took no action.
A police official termed the allegations of family baseless and claimed that one of the family members is associated with a separatist group Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, who along with some other people tried to disrupt the peace in the area. He said that some ‘miscreants’ resorted to stone-pelting while police used mild force to disperse them.
