Srinagar: After Hurriyat patriarch Syed Ali Geelani was barred from attending the funeral prayers of a neighbour Naaz Parveen, wife of Mian Bashir Ahmad, who passed away this morning, the family decided to carry her dead body to Geelani’s house.

The family wanted Geelani to lead the funeral prayers of the lady but police did not allow him to come out from his home and join the mourners.

The police vehicle that remains parked outside Hurtiyat leader’s residence was removed from the place to make way for mourners. But the vehicle had to be push started. Funeral prayers were offered inside the spacious lawns of Geelani’s official residence which was attended by scores of people from the locality. On this occasion, Geelani prayed for the departed soul.

He also condemned the police act of barring him from coming out for offering the funeral prayer. “This is the example of state oppression,” Geelani said while condemning the police action.
