In one of the most distressing image, a lineman is shown literally on fire while repairing a transformer in Banihal. Post-death, locals protested as the roasted body was retrieved from the junction.
Identified as Mohammad Saleem Sheikh, son of Abdul Rashid Sheikh, a resident of Chareel village, the man had ascended up the junction for making repairs. He had gone to reinstall a transformer but was electrocuted to death.
Saleem had disjoined the transformer in the morning and sent it for repairs. Later, when it was to be reinstalled, he felt there was no supply as his department had disconnected it earlier in the day. But that was incorrect. No sooner did he touch the line, he was frozen. The incident took place at 3:15 pm, information mined from facebook said. The incident took place on a junction between high transmission line and low transmission distribution line near Darshipora.
Details said after watching the debilitating death of Saleem, when finally he was removed, his arm was on ground and the body was completely burnt. Later the residents resorted to massive protests against the PDD. Traffic on the highway was disrupted for five hours. The government could send people home only after the residents were promised a government job to his family and investigation in the incident.
