Counter-insurgency grid had laid a siege of Hanjishat hamlet in Langate after it got specific information that there were two militants hiding up in the village. During the wee hours on Monday, the troops reached the spot and started the cordon.
Official sources said that when the cordon was almost being completed, the militants appeared on the scene, resorted to firing and manage to move out of the cordon. Army retaliated to the fire and was under the impression that the fire exchange was establishing the contact, a pre-requisite to a gun-battle.
“We are in the process of locating them again,” one police sources said. “We were sure that they were two and both were foreigners.”
The siege is still in place, reports said. The militants are being searched in neighbouring areas. The army has deployed sniffer dogs to track the militant duo on the run, informed sources said.
Onset of winter normally witnesses increased encounters between rebels and government forces because upper reaches becomes quite inhospitable for the militants to hide. Besides, the open passes on the LoC remain slightly more active in autumn as winter blocks them completely.
