Look, Who Was Online During the Ban

While the expectation was that former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, a tech savvy politician, would manage to stay connected during the internet blockade his successor enforced, it was not. It was, however, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who successfully managed e-mailing his statement detailing his Eid sermon on Friday.

“APHC Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq who was supposed deliver the Eid sermon was once again put under house arrest,” the statement that landed in Kashmir Life mailbox, the same day, said. “APHC spokesperson has very strongly condemned the continued house detention of the Mirwaiz on the auspicious day of Eid.”

This was sixth consecutive Eid that Mirwaiz was disallowed from offering congregational prayers on this important day. This year, however, he made his speech on phone. Following the speech, the statement was issued.

Ironically, the tech-savvy Omar was off-line. The last tweet on his account was on September 24, one the eve of Eid. “Eid Mubarak,” the tweet read. “Since it is now confirmed that I won’t be online for 40 hours starting from tomorrow 5 am.” Omar is still off-line as this news is being uploaded.

Interestingly, Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed’s Eid day engagements were not reported by the government. This will be his first Eid after the introduction of the facility that his activities and prayers on the day of Eid or the activities of his cabinet will be missing from the history. Mufti, it may be recalled here, was instrumental in ensuring introduction of mobile telephony in the state.
