SRINAGAR: The formation of public opinion plays a crucial role in anticipating attacks against women, said Meenakshi Negi, member secretary of the National Commission for Women (NCW).

Presiding over the regional gathering of women’s commissions from southern states and Union territories, Negi, as per The Times of India underscored NCW’s proactive stance in preventing attacks against women rather than merely responding to incidents.

“Waiting for untoward events to happen is not an option. To achieve this, establishing a robust public opinion and conducting awareness campaigns are imperative. People should be educated about potential dangers, and the public should internalize these messages,” Negi stated, The Times of India reported.

She said the majority of the girls being taken to Kashmir are from southern states. “Most of the girls being rescued from Srinagar belong to southern or eastern states. They are being lured by offering a job, marriage and a happy life,” she said.

The recommendations stemming from this regional meeting will be compiled and integrated into the commission’s forthcoming initiatives. P Sathidevi, Chairperson of the State Women’s Commission, raised concerns about the blatant violation of women’s human rights in Manipur.

“This situation is detrimentally impacting our society’s very fabric. We must collectively come together to support women who have fallen victim to attacks. The NCW should provide greater financial backing to Jagratha Samithis,” Satheedevi urged.

Apart from representatives from various states’ women’s commissions and the Women & Child Development (W&CD) departments, participants from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Puducherry were also part of the one-day conference.
