National Flag Unfurled At Bakshi Stadium After Five Years

SRINAGAR: The refurbished Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar hosted the main Independence Day function of Jammu and Kashmir after a gap of five years, as it was closed in 2018 for upgrading and renovations.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha hoisted the Tricolour and took the salute at the March Past on the occasion of the 77th Independence Day at Bakshi Stadium.

Sinha said that ‘security forces are working tirelessly to put the last nail in the coffin of terror and its ecosystem’.

“Our government is committed to making J&K a terror-free region. Cross-border terror has acted as a cancer for society. Our security forces are working tirelessly to eradicate terror and its ecosystem,” Sinha said.

Lauding the role of security forces in ensuring a peaceful atmosphere in J&K, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said that the mountains of J&K have witnessed the priceless sacrifices of our force personnel who laid down their lives for the nation’s integrity and sovereignty. “On the eve of the 77th Independence Day celebrations, I salute the martyrs and want to assure their families that the entire J&K and the nation stand with them. You will not be let down in any way,” LG Sinha said.

LG Sinha said, “Three years ago, I assured the people of J&K from this place that I would fulfill each and every commitment that paves the way to a peaceful Jammu and Kashmir. Today we have achieved a lot of success, and more needs to be done in the coming times.”

“J&K’s government is trying its best to ensure a peaceful and fearless atmosphere for every citizen, allowing them to live their lives of their own choice and without any coercion. Three years ago, I didn’t make any promises; instead, I stated that I had come to J&K to fulfill promises,” he added.

An official stated that no restrictions were put in place and no pass was needed to enter Bakshi Stadium, where the main Independence Day function was held.

Bakshi Stadium has historically hosted the main Independence Day function of Jammu and Kashmir, but it had to be closed in 2018 for upgrades and renovations.

Independence Day parades over the past five years were held at the Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium in Sonwar.

The chief minister usually presided over the function, but in the absence of an elected government, the governor of the erstwhile state would perform the honors.

Since the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, the Lieutenant Governor appointed by the Centre has been the chief guest at these functions.
