Srinagar
After remaining under siege for 19 consecutive weeks, government today allowed mandatory congregational Friday prayers at Srinagar’s historic Jamia Masjid.
Reports said that there was no deployment around the Kashmir’s historic 622-year-old Jamia Masjid today.
Kashmir is shut for last 140 days, barring 4 days of relaxation by resistance leadership, since the killing of militant commander Burhan Wani on July 8 in South Kashmir’s Bemdoora area.
The successive governments have been putting siege around the historic Jamia Masjid on Fridays during uprisings and protests.
In fact, the Sikh rulers of Kashmir in 19th century would often close the historic Masjid to disallow people from rising against then establishment.
After the killing of Hizb commander Burhan Wani, government disallowed prayers in the Grand Mosque fearing pro-freedom demonstrations. The mosque has since remained under continues siege with heavy deployment of forces.
Soon after the prayers culminated today, people took out a pro-freedom procession shouting “pro-Aazadi” and “anti-India” slogans.
However, they later dispersed peacefully.
Pertinently, the Kashmir’s head priest, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who leads the congregational Friday prayers at Jamia Masjid is under continuous house detention and could not lead the prayers today.
