Pakistan has withdrawn six of its diplomats working at the Pakistani embassy in New Delhi amid increasing tension between the two countries over Kashmir.
Two Pakistani officials said Pakistan has unearthed a “network of Indian spy agencies” working at the Indian embassy in Islamabad.
Authorities have also sought Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s permission to expel some Indian diplomats.
In New Delhi, Vikas Swarup, the Indian external affairs ministry’s spokesperson, confirmed that six Pakistani diplomats flew back to Islamabad on Wednesday after being withdrawn by their government.
Last week, each side expelled one of the other government’s diplomats as well.
Meanwhile, a news report in The Hindustan Times said that “safety concerns could prompt” India to bring back eight officials from its high commission in Islamabad after six members of the Pakistani mission here left for home on Wednesday, taking ties to a fresh low amid heightened tensions.
“The safety of the Indian diplomats was compromised as their identities were posted online and their photos flashed by Pakistani news channels. The Pakistani media described two of the officials as spies and quoted sources as saying that they were involved in espionage and subversive activities,” the news report added.
