‘Lack of Accommodation, Basic Amenities’ spark Protests by Lawyers

KL Report

SRINAGAR

Lack of basic amenities in newly shifted Lower Court in Sanat Ghar Bemina in Srinagar city invited protest from lawyers on Friday who according to reports castigated judicial officials and the State Government for forcing lawyers to resume their work at a place which according to them not only lacks basic facilities but is unhygienic too.

The lawyers’ community told CNS that the Registrar Judicial High Court had issued a notification, informing lawyers that Lower Court affected due to floods has been shifted temporarily to Sanat Ghar Bemina and lawyers were further informed that the Court shall resume its functioning from the same place from October 24 (Friday).

Reports said that as the lawyers reached Bemina they were aghast to see the condition of buildings there. “Rooms provided to lawyers lack all types of facilities. There are no doors and windows. There is no facility of bathrooms and other things. How can we work in such conditions,” the protesting lawyers who staged a massive protest amidst rains said.

They alleged that some top Judicial officers have occupied fully maintained portions of the temporary court buildings while lawyers have been provided wretched accommodation.

“Since September 7, when floods ravaged Srinagar city, the lawyers’ community have been sitting idle. Neither Judiciary nor the state government put any effort to provide us proper accommodation and space so that we can resume our normal business,” Advocate Irfan Ahmed said.

President Kashmir Bar Association, Advocate Mian Abdul Qayoom while addressing the protesting lawyers castigated the Judiciary for issuing notification at a time when according to him, time was not conducive for the resumption of normal business in courts.

He alleged that top judicial officials have got decent accommodations while lawyers have been left at the mercy of God. The lawyers decided to boycott Court proceedings till they are provided decent accommodation.
