Corruption In SMC: Two Officials Caught Accepting Bribe

Barely after a gap of two months, when in August this year, a Enforcement Officer of Srinagar Municipal Corporation was caught red handed by police while accepting a bribe of Rs 32,000 for granting building permission, two more officials of the Corporation were trapped for the same reasons by Vigilance Organization.


Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) which is allegedly known for its corrupt practices was in news again when on the complaint of a trader Abdul Rehman Reshi, Vigliance Organization apprehended red handed the head assistant of Corporation Chowdray Mehrajudin Buja and complier Aamir Rashid while accepting a bribe of Rs 65,000 for allotment of shops at Al-Qadoos Market located at Exhibition Crossing Srinagar. “Chowdray Mehrajudin Buja was harassing us on daily basis on the one or the other pretext. He was misusing his official position and was demanding bribe from some of the Shopkeepers for the allotment of their shops thought this matter was still subjudice,” the complainant Abdul Rehman Reshi who is the president of Al-Qadoos Market told CNS.


He added that few days ago, the ‘corrupt’ official along with his team arrived at Al-Qadoos Market during the dead of the night and broke shutters of those shops whose owners had refused him to give bribe. “When we protested over his ‘illegal’ action, he informed us that all was done on the orders of Commissioner SMC, while the Commissioner feigned ignorance about the matter,” Another trader told CNS.


Pertinently, when CNS contacted Mehraj Buja over the issue, the admitted that Commissioner SMC had given him orders to break the shutters of those shops who refuse to pay SMC allotment fee.


Abdul Rehman added that from past few days, head assistant SMC, Mehrajuddin Buja was after him, demanding a bribe of Rs two lakhs to hush up the matter of allotment. “I informed Vigilance and a team accompanied me in civvies. Buja along with his colleague Amir Rashid came out from his office section and accepted the bribe. Both were trapped by Vigilance that was headed by DySP.


DySP Vigilance confirmed to CNS that a special team arrested two SMC officials for accepting a bribe of Rs 65,000. “We have booked both the tainted officials namely Chowdray Mehrajudin Buja and Aamir Rashid and an FIR vide number 39/2014 under Prevention of Corruption Act and Ranbir Panel Code was registered against the duo,” he said.


Pertinently, Tehsildar Khanyar and Srinagar police arrested an SMC Enforcement Officer in a trap while taking bribe from a commoner for carrying out construction in Bagiyas Srinagar in August this year.


Commissioner SMC, Dr G.N.Qasba while terming the incident unfortunate told CNS that every organization has such corrupt elements and unfortunately SMC is not an exception. He added that strict action will be taken against these officials who have brought a disrepute to the Corporation.
