Shopian incident: ‘Violence no means to address issues’, says CM

Srinagar: Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti has condemned the killing of three army personnel in a militant attack at Shopian in the wee hours today, an official spokesman in Jammu said.

The Chief Minister said violence has never been and could never be a means to address issues. She said the unending cycle of violence in the State has brought untold miseries to the people and collective efforts are needed to get the State out of the morass of death and destruction.

Mehbooba Mufti also expressed deep grief and anguish over the death of a civilian in the incident.

She conveyed her sympathies with the bereaved families of the soldiers and the civilian.

Police spokesman earlier said the police and RR were returning from a CASO from Kungnoo when they were ambushed at Moulu Chitragam. Six soldiers were injured in the attack of whom two died in the hospital. An elderly women Taja Begum, police said, was killed by a stray bullet when she was inside her residence. The attack has taken place at 2 am in the night, according to police.

The ambush took place at a time when it was pitched dark and the soldiers apparently were not ready. The firing is reported to have taken place for almost 10 minutes, senior police officers have told reporters.

Post-attack, there were allegations of ransacking. Shopian township went into instant strike after the incident.

Off late, the south Kashmir is witnessing renewed militancy that has resulted in the increase in incidence of massive military movement. This at various places has led to clashes between the army and the civilians.
