Srinagar: To highlight the role of science and technology towards the society at large and specially abled in particular Islamic University of Science & Technology Tuesday celebrated the ‘National Science Day’.
The event was dedicated to late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam for his pioneering contribution towards the differently abled persons.
Speaking during his inaugural address, Vice Chancellor, IUST Prof Mushtaq A Siddiqi, highlighted the current global trends in science and technology that are catering to the needs of specially abled.
“Due to scientific innovations, viable facilities are being developed around the world especially in the area of mobilization that confronts the specially abled people,” he said.
He also emphasized on the need for people to change their mindset towards the differently abled persons. “People with any kind of disability have to be seen as assets as has been established in all fields and we need to develop disability-friendly systems. Among the faculties of humans there is an element of ‘Humanism’ which is an important aspect of charity and it should be inculcated effectively from the beginning,” Prof. Siddiqi said.
Dean Academic Affairs and Coordinating Chairman Prof Mushtaq A Qureshi in his welcome address stressed that the advances in science and technology will go far ahead in bringing the specially abled people at par with everyone in the contemporary competitive scenario of the world.
Highlighting the contribution of Late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Azad towards the field he said, “It was due to him that there was an advancement in the research and development of prosthetic limbs, which were reduced in weight from 3.5 Kgs to mere 400 gms because of the light weight constituent materials generally used in space technology.”
Special lecture series covering various aspects of the theme was also held on the occasion.
The university also organised a special performance by specially abled students of the Zaiba Aapa Institute of Inclusive Education Bijbehara and a special cash prize was also announced for them. A parallel symposium was also conducted on “Scientific Contribution for Specially Abled Persons & Future Prospects” and prizes were also distributed among the best three paper presenters.
