Expressing solidarity with 27-yr-old Muzzafar Ahmed Rather and his family who has been awarded death sentence by a Kolkata court Hurriyat Conference (m) chairperson Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday said that the institute of judiciary in India is time and again used by the Indian state to punish the people of J&K for their political views and aspirations. Mirwaiz said announcing death sentence to Muzzafar on flimsy grounds of “sedition” when there is no substantial evidence against him is a “mockery of justice”.  “Same was done in the case of Muhammad Maqbool Bhat and Mohammad Afzal Guru in the name of satisfying the collective conscience of the nation.”

Mirwaiz said such judgments are in keeping with the states policy to eliminate Kashmiris and to instil fear in them and terrorize them. Each day this policy plays itself out in one way or the other Incidents such as in Samboora, Pampore, where forces fired indiscriminately resulting in five young boys getting bullets in their legs and thighs and who are undergoing treatment at various hospitals. He added that residents of a house including women and children were fired upon at will by the forces, however, they were lucky enough to escape unhurt. Mirwaiz said that the situation in Kashmir is such that people are at the mercy of occupational forces who represent the state authorities and have no accountability for their actions and people are not even safe within the four walls of their homes.

Mirwaiz said while this is the condition of people ,dramas for the chair are enacted amongst the squabbling collaborators whose role has been reduced to agents of occupation ,to consolidate and further the interests of the occupier and compound our suffering.

Meanwhile soon after the Friday prayers a protest rally led by Imam-e-Hai Syed Ahmad Naqashbani, Sufi Mushtaq Ahmad, Jaffar Kashmiri was taken out in solidarity with Muzafar Ahmad Rather and against the Mirwaiz’s house arrest. The rally was dispersed forcibly by using smoke shells and pepper gas in which many youth including two photo journalists were injured.
