Artifacts unearthed at Semthan, Bijbhara

Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums has successfully unearthed various ancient sculptures belonging to the Kashmir School of Sculpture from Samthan Bijbhara in Islamabad, a government spokesman said.

The artifacts so recovered included three fragmented sculptures of lord Vishnu (without face, legs and arms) which date back to 12th century A.D.

Two fragmentary sculptures adorned in war dresses, riding on elephant have also been recovered from the Archaeological Site at Semthan.

The artifacts were  taken to SPS Museum Srinagar for preservation, while the documentation of these objects is under way.

The site is archaeologically rich and further findings are expected.
