Masarat Alam Bhat, Kashmir’s separatist who has spent 19 of last 26 years in jail, moved a free man out of the Kathua jail Thursday afternoon. He, however, was taken by police from the gate of the jail, sources said.

Bhat was arrested by police on April 17, 2015, barely 40 days after he was set free, for the first time since 2010. Facing almost 50 cases, Bhat is facing as many as 34 PSAs.

Sources said that Bhat was set free by the jail authorities on the orders issued by the High court. “He seems to have been re-arrested by a police party that had moved from Baramulla,” one police source said. “In fact, the same party also drove three more persons from the same jail who were also released by the court.”

Though the courts have quashed the cases against him, the police have been filing fresh cases. The latest case in which he seemingly has been re-arrested was issued by the District Magistrate Baramulla. This order accuses Bhat of making the ongoing agitation “successful” while being in jail.

Bhat’s main PSA was quashed by High Court on August 21, 2015 and was set free but was re-arrested on September 1, 2015. In April, May, September and now December in 2016, he was released by court and re-arrested.
