SRINAGAR: Continuous rains after a long dry spell lashed various villages of Kupwara with flash floods over main roads and paddy fields causing widespread damage to the crops since Tuesday night, reports from the belt said.
The incessant rains leading to flood have caused havoc in Kupwara villages after the steep increase in water in River Kehmil and its other canals. Vast stretches of agricultural land were inundated and damaged following breach in rivers and irrigation canals.
Areas that suffered damage include Shumnag, Solina, Gugloosa, Poshpora, Kunan, and Babagund. Over hundred acres of agricultural land, bridges, roads and schools were damaged by flash floods caused by incessant rains.
“Hundred acres of Paddy fields have been damaged by the flash floods but this is not the only loss, actual loss will be evaluated after detailed survey,” Tehsildar Trehgam, Ghulam Mohiuddin said. “We have delegated various teams of Flood Control, Revenue and Agriculture departments to evaluate the losses.”
“Currently I am surveying the area of Poshpora, at least 80 kanals of paddy land has been damaged, one house is partially damaged and middle school Sheikhpora is also affected due to flash floods,” Naib Tehsildar Trehgam, Ghulam Hassan, informed.
Locals alleged that the floods have destroyed the electric supply set up. They said the government has not spent even a single penny on the dredging of the local canals to improve their carrying capacity.
