Family of youth killed during summer 2016 accuses police of harassment; Police deny

Srinagar

The family of Irfan Fayaz Wani, an auto driver, who was killed last year during the summer uprising, has accused police of harassment.

Irfan, a resident of Malik Angan Fateh Kadal, was killed during clashes with forces in Malaratta area of old city in Srinagar.

Mother of Irfan told Kashmir Life that on the occasion of his death anniversary on August 21, “We had organised a small program in his memory. However, the function was disrupted by police.” Her younger son, Aijaz Fayaz Wani was also detained.

Today, in the morning, police released Aijaz. However, after two hours he was again called to the police station and was harassed on one pretext or the other.

A relative of Aijaz told Kashmir Life that he is being questioned as to why the family had organised a program in the slain son’s memory. “He was asked as to why did the family make banners and poster. On whose behest were they made,” he said?

Aijaz, who drives the auto that once Irfan used to drive, is the lone bread earner of his family. Besides mother Rafeeqa, Aijaz is survived by two sisters, who are yet to get married.

By the time this report was being filed, Aijaz was released. However, his relatives said, Aijaz has been asked by the police to report to the police station as and when he is called.

However, Police have denied the allegations made by the family and termed them “baseless and fabricated”.

An official at the police chowki Fateh Kadal told Kashmir Life that this is a cooked up story. “We never detained Aijaz,” he said. “We noticed that Aijaz had erected some banners on the road on Monday and called him to the chowki. Later, his mother came and took him along. We did not detain him for the night,” the official said.

When asked if he was asked to report to the chowki again as claimed by the family, the official denied the claims.
