Abu Dujana killing: Student protests erupt across Kashmir; Colleges, Schools closed

Students clashed with forces across Kashmir valley on Tuesday after the killing of LeT commander Abu Dujana in a gunfight with forces in Pulwama district.

Reports of student protests were received from Kulgam, Handwara, Pulwama and Srinagar parts.

Protests were staged at Government Degree College Kulgam. Reports said that hundreds of students boycotted their classes and staged massive protests.

They were shouting slogans in favour of Abu Dujana.

Students clashed with forces in Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Reports said that many students were injured in the clashes.

Protests also erupted in Amar Singh college Srinagar and students also clashed with forces in city centre Lalchowk.

Panic gripped Lal Chowk after students from various schools clashed with police in Regal Chowk and other areas following the killing of a civilian and two militants.

As the news about the killings spread in the area, students including girls took to streets and staged pro-freedom protests in the area.

However, police deployed in the area tried to disperse the protesting students, triggering clashes.

Amid the chaos, shopkeepers downed their shutters and traffic movement got affected on MA road and Residency road.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports said police detained two to three students during the clashes in Lal Chowk, however, official confirmation is awaited.

Authorities have ordered closure of all colleges and schools in Kashmir in the wake of the killings of a civilian and militants, including LeT commander Abu Dujana.

“As a precautionary measure all the colleges and schools of Kashmir valley are hereby closed for today on 01-08-2017,” reads the order issued by Divisional Commissioner Baseer Ahmed Khan.

Dujana was killed along with Arif lelhari during a gunfight with forces in Hakripora village of Pulwama earlier today.
