SRINAGAR
Metrology department has recorded 60 mm rain in Srinagar only which is third highest since 1992.
Srinagar had received 116 mm rains in 1992 and 112 mm in 2012.
The department Thursday termed the situation as “alarming” because the rains are going on throughout the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
The department recorded 220 mm rains in last 24 hours in South Kashmir only.
Director Metrology Department, Sonum Lotus told Kashmir Life that the difference between 1992, 2012 and the present situation is worrying because rains are going on in the whole state. “In 1992 and 2012 the rains were confined to Valley only but this time we are worried because the whole state is involved,” Lotus said adding the normal rainfall for Srinagar which is manageable is only 27mm.
Lotus said that in September 2012 Srinagar received 112 mm rains but that too was limited to the valley.
“Our worry is only that rains are continuing across the state, we recorded 220 mm rain at Qazigund since last twenty four hours,” Lotus said.
When asked about the weather forecast, Lotus said that the rains will continue to occur till Saturday afternoon. “From September 6, afternoon the situation will start improving,” he said.
Talking about the reasons of the present situation, Lotus said it is because of the western disturbances coming from the Arabian Ocean.
He also said encroachments have added to the situation. “We must remain ready for such type of situations as we live in a flood prone zone,” Lotus concluded.
