Kashmir Floods: Civil Secretariat Reopens After 11 Days

KL Report

SRINAGAR

Although many areas surrounding the Civil Secretariat are submerged and the ground floor of the Secretariat building is not functional, the government headquarter in the summer capital reopened on Thursday after eleven days of the devastating floods which has taken around 250 lives so far.

Sources said that very small number of employees reached the Civil Secretariat on the reopening day which included mostly security officials. They added that there was no official work in the Secretariat as everybody was busy in knowing about the flood and aftermath.

The deluge has completely paralysed the state administration with the police control room, office of the fire and emergency service, office of the IG Kashmir and the J&K High Court in the city being flooded.

Government has already decided that no holidays shall be observed on Saturdays in the Barbar Move offices. The decision in this effect was taken during a cabinet meeting last Monday.

Lal Chowk, the business centre of Srinagar, is still under several feet of water, making it difficult for authorities and local voluntary organisations to reach out with relief material in the affected areas.

Hundreds are still missing in the floods, the worst in the state in over many decades.
